This is a great book for fans of TV's long running Wagon Train show, complete with numerous pages of photos of the series stars and famous guest stars. It also includes informative quotes and stories from the lead actors and many guest stars. Episodes are listed by season, with a very brief synopsis of each and the guest stars who appeared in them.

To my mind, there were four classic b&w adult TV westerns aired during the 1960s: HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, GUNSMOKE, RAWHIDE and WAGON TRAIN. James Rosin offers up an informative, entertaining history of that last show in this 2008 release from Autumn Road Company. First off, it's a crying shame it took so long for such a book to appear. Three of the four original 'horsemen' are long gone along with many of the other creative people who helped make 'Wagon Train' the endearing classic it is. What that means is that Rosin can offer up an overview of the show - the 'skeleton,' if you will - but what he can't supply is all the 'meat,' the first-person reminiscences, insights, etc. that Ward Bond, Frank McGrath, Terry Wilson, John McIntire, producer Howard Christie, director Joe Pevney, et al could have provided. Rosin does provide a season-by-season breakdown of the show with short info blurbs on each show; short reminiscences by Robert Horton, Denny Scott Miller and various other 'Wagon Train' alumni; listings of fan favorites; bios of some of the actors; etc. A nice introduction but hardly definitive. (It's unfortunate Rosin didn't interview Horton at length). The text is illustrated with dozens of evocative photographs. To be honest, I lost interest in the show after Ward Bond died. He WAS the wagonmaster and brought such a sense of authenticity to the proceedings that you were hooked. No one did bluster better than Bond and his weekly face-to-faces with the Charlie Wooster character brought an element of humor sadly lacking in the McIntire shows. In any case, WAGON TRAIN, THE TELEVISION SERIES will be a fond trip down memory lane for all us baby boomers. 'Wagon Train,' especially its first four seasons, was a wonderful show, a great show filled with endearing characters and memorable storylines. Though not definitive, James Rosin's book is probably the best 'Wagon Train' tribute we'll ever see. Recommended.

This book is a comprehensive study of the series. It not only has photos of the main stars and co-stars, it also has photos of some of the episodes for the full eight seasons. It includes comments and details from many of the actors who co-starred and guest starred in the series, as well as biographies. Each episode is listed with a synopsis and who guest starred in it. It's fascinating to get the inside story from the comments that many of the actors have made, which sheds a new light on the inner workings of the series. It's a must for any Wagon Train aficionado.

I like that it is all about Wagon Train and that this book also has an episode guide in the back of the book. Wagon Train is also becoming one of my new old favorite TV shows to watch with my Momma. She'll usually call me to come watch it with her and we end up watching 3 hours worth. Definitely a good read! 😊

Wonderful book. A combination of reference material of all the episodes with information on the story line and those starring.Much more than that - great photos , thumbnail biographies, anecdotes and insights into the actors' characters and behind the scenes glimpses of how it was all put together to make such a successful series. It is a well written and well produced book that I find completely immersive. As a long time fan of Wagon Train and of Robert Horton in particular I'm reliving my youth!

Wagon Train, the TV show really interested me all of a sudden during the pandemic. I was unaware that a 1950s Hollywood TV series could have that much depth to it, and fine acting, as Wagon Train did, and still does. So, James Rosin's book is great. The first 58 pages of selected interviews is a highly worthwhile read. I will always keep this book on hand.

We were disappointed with this book. We had purchased a great work on "Combat," complete with detailed episode guides, background information and stories about the series creation and evolution. This book, "Wagon Train..." left us wanting and really appreciating the book on "Combat" by Jo Davidsmeyer. There is some interesting stories but they are disjointed and presented as a series of brief interviews with guest stars and Robert Horton. There is no chronological, or logical period, organization to the book. Half the book is some interesting stuff - not as in-depth or presented coherently as we would like and the other half is a listing of the shows and a very brief description (same you receive on TIVO) and a list of the main actors. THERE IS NO INDEX, if you can believe it. All in all, a sloppy poorly organized treatment of the series. It is a great series and deserves better.
