The poles are about half-inch in diameter and are connected by threaded connectors. From a load standpoint, that size is sufficient. However, the smaller poles and overall design result in the assembled unit susceptible to swaying. Also, the wire racks/shelves are quite thin and light weight. The 2 drawers can easily fall out of their tracks. If there were 2 more shelves, that may help to stiffen the unit. The cover is nice--light weight and should provide good dust protection. Overall, the unit serves my need, which is temporary closet space. But if you want something that lasts, you might consider the heavy duty version. ... show more
