    • My go-to reed at the moment
First a disclaimer. I'm not an orchestra clarinetist nor do I play one on TV. I'm an old brass player who has transitioned to the clarinet for jazz playing, because, let's face it, clarinets are really (insert current synonym for 'hot', 'cool', 'bad', 'phat', et cetera). I generally like Vandoren traditional reeds because I don't have to scrape so much of the roughness off of them when I take them out of the package like I do with their biggest sales rival Rico. They seem to be a lot smoother on the lip. Other reviewers have commented on variability, which is going to be true out of anything made out of what is essentially a big stalk of dried grass. As an example for variability, my current mouthpiece which I use only for lowbrow jazz is very open so it needs a softer reed than classical players with their closed mouthpieces. Strength 2 and 1/2 is the usual but sometimes it plays better with a 3 or a 2. Numbers are not set in stone and reeds get softer the longer you play them in a session and the longer you play them in general. So some of my 3's have evolved to 2 and 1/2 and some of the 2 and 1/2 have gotten softer. What works on a given day seems related to the weather and humidity level. These reeds are nicely balanced. By balanced I mean that when you turn the instrument from side to side about 30 degrees and blow both sides will sound the same with the same amount of effort. Back in the day when I sat in the bandroom watching the reed player do this I thought they were just crazy. It was only when I watched Tom Ridenour's reed balancing video I tried it and and it really works. I don't know if Amazon has a link to it but they do sell some of his products. Amazon is cheaper for these than any of the local stores, and reeds are worth buying by the box due to the variability factor.. ... show more
