This is a beautiful device made of aluminum. When closed,, the mounting base is 11 13/16” long excluding the ball on the end. If you are mounting this in a cupboard and you intend to close a door over that cover, be sure you have required available depth. My set came with no directions, although it’s pretty obvious you just connect it to some surface. My set came with a set of 1” flat head wood screws and 3/4” round head bolts. I believe the latter would be used if you had installed a threaded insert. I don’t believe a flat head wood screw is the right type of screw to mount this product (a round head has much more surface area). Regardless, my cabinet is narrower than 1”, so I had to procure my own screws. This product is really elegant, so, before buying, make sure you can get the correct color of screw to match the product if that is important to you. I had no issues mounting it with the screws I provided. I was very impressed with the smoothness of the shaft. It is not simply one tube stuck inside another—it is a very tight fit and the inner tube is completely enclosed in the outer tube—feels like there is felt or something lining the tubes. Recommended.

I started looking for one of these after I stayed at a hotel that had a valet rod which made touching up / steaming up my suit, shirt, and pants a breeze. If you need to quickly see how items in your ensemble go together (shirts, pants, sport jackets, suits and ties) or to steam/touch up clothing, this thing is a godsend. You slide the bar out, hang your clothes hangers on the bar to use a lint roller, steamer, or brush, and it quickly becomes one of those accessories you never knew how you went without for so many years. The advantage of a retractable one such as this is that it slides out of the way when not in-use. Quality seems good with extension and retraction very smooth and solid bar when extended and it has held up to daily use now for a few weeks. Installation was pretty easy if you know how to mark and measure to ensure you install it square. In terms of the unit itself, I got the brushed nickel / stainless version so I wasn't worried about the screws not matching but that is one thing to think about if you go with the gold or black version. The only other consideration I would mention is that the wooden mounting screws are long enough to punch through the backside of 3/4" board which many built-in closets use, so be sure to check the depth of what you're mounting this to ensure it doesn't come through the other side. I don't know why flathead screws were included with this kit, but you can pick up shorter wood screws at any hardware store and switch to roundhead for a more flush and tight fit of the screw against the frame. This bar has become part of my daily routine when I need to pick out my outfit for the day or need to steam, brush, or lint roll one of my suits, worth the price for how useful it is.
