Description

"An essential book for everyone who seeks to reclaim the commons and build a just and equitable society."—John Nichols, The Nation An exploration of bottled water's impact on social justice and sustainability, and how diverse movements are fighting back. In just four decades, bottled water has transformed from a luxury niche item into a ubiquitous consumer product, representing a $300 billion market dominated by global corporations. It sits at the convergence of a mounting ecological crisis of single-use plastic waste and climate change, a social crisis of affordable access to safe drinking water, and a struggle over the fate of public water systems. Unbottled examines the vibrant movements that have emerged to question the need for bottled water and challenge its growth in North America and worldwide. Drawing on extensive interviews with activists, residents, public officials, and other participants in controversies ranging from bottled water's role in unsafe tap water crises to groundwater extraction for bottling in rural communities, Daniel Jaffee asks what this commodity's meteoric growth means for social inequality, sustainability, and the human right to water. Unbottled profiles campaigns to reclaim the tap and addresses the challenges of ending dependence on packaged water in places where safe water is not widely accessible. Clear and compelling, it assesses the prospects for the movements fighting plastic water and working to ensure water justice for all. Read more

  • An extremely critical read for all
This is a sobering and eye opening account of the confluence of our crises including but not limited to: single use plastic pollution, degradation of our public water systems, capitalization of our public for profit, health problems related to plastic ingestion, and depletion of our precious ground and surface waters. The book is a hard to ignore call to action and a must read for all who are concerned with correcting or nonsensical dependence on bottled water, especially plastic bottled water. It is an especially important read for those who are not aware of the problems associated with single use plastics and worldwide water access issues. ... show more

  • Bottled water is the new smoking!
A fascinating history of the commodification and privatization of drinking water, the environmental and health issues with plastic water bottles, and hopeful news about successful campaigns against bottled water. While it is a dense and academic read, it's a must for anyone in a position to influence policy around drinking water - including private citizens. "The water bottle has in some ways become the mink coat or the pack of cigarettes. It's socially not very acceptable to the young folks and that scares me." - John Caturano, Senior Sustainability manager for Nestlé Waters North America. That's right John. After reading this book, I will do everything I can to avoid walking around with a disposable bottle of water, it's so last century! ... show more
