  • A week with the Umidigi G1
Size: 2+32G Color: Sunglow Gold
Disclaimer: I am supposed to receive a partial refund of the purchase price from Umidigi for leaving a product review. This is the first such product I've review for them, after owning numerous Umidigi phones over the past 3 or 4 years and recently two of their smart watches and leaving reviews (not always positive) for those devices. This is not a phone I would consider buying for myself or anyone in my immediate family. I rely on my phone for entertainment very little but I do sometimes use chrome to get stuff done around the web that needs doing when I can't get to my desktop. My bang-for-the-buck pick would be somewhere in the $200 range currently. That being said, I didn't expect a lot from this device. What I did expect, based on previous experiences with nearly half a dozen Umidigi phone models, was great battery life and a good screen. One of the things that have kept me sticking to their phones are the giant batteries they put in them. According to the specs, this phone should have the same battery as the Bison, a phone that both my wife and I have used (my wife is still currently using one). With a ~1.5ghz quad core processor and only 2GB of RAM, I expected that trying to use this thing to do smart-phoney things would be a pretty terrible experience. The bad. I'll start here just to be different and to try to close with a little bit of positivity (I used to be a manager in charge of reviewing performance, I've always heard it's best to take this approach in those situations as well). The worst for me is that I believe Umidigi isn't being honest about the battery in this phone. They have been dishonest about advertising features in some of their phone models before--the Bison is far from a tough or rugged phone. Don't drop it screen down from 3+ feet and don't get it anywhere near water. I know from experience. Then, don't expect customer service to honor the warranty (go in with very low expectations for their customer service, unless things have changed in the past 18 months or so). However, in the past they've always been honest about what's in the phone. Unless Android 12 Go edition is really inefficient somewhere, this thing has something closer to a 3000mah battery, which would be more the norm for a budget phone. I got 2.5 days of use per full charge out of the phone with pretty light use. One of those aforementioned Bisons went 8 days on it's factory charge before shutting off due to low battery, and that's with a more powerful octa-core chip in it. The charger included with this phone isn't the normal beefy little brick that Umidigi packs with their higher end products either. It takes 3 hours to charge the phone. I'm very saddened that Umidigi might be resorting to lying about their phone specs and if this is confirmed or if I have similar experiences in the future I will move to a different budget brand. With that out of the way, another downside is that the phone is indeed slow and hard to use for smart-phoney things. I'll have more to say about this in a bit. To wrap up things that are negative with regard to this model--the external speaker isn't good at all. No where near the quality of what's in the Power 3 or Bison (which aren't exactly audiophile quality but good for budget phones). Listening to anything for pleasure from the external speaker would be an unpleasant experience. The things that are so-so about the phone: The overall performance. But wait, I said it was slow? Yeah, it's pretty slow and sluggish. However, you find that it is predictably slow. During my time with it there didn't seem to be periods where it go ridiculously bogged down by multiple things going on at once. It just went about it's tasks at it's own pace, much like grandma at the grocery store. I noticed during my poking around that it's using the ZRAM feature of the linux kernel (Android just runs on top of Linux FYI). That's an interesting idea for a device using only 2GB of RAM to help keep performance dropping as bad from swapping to the internal mmc device. I didn't dig very deep, but I'd wager they have 0.5GB of RAM devoted to this. What ZRAM does is take a portion of the system memory and use it as cache/swap space and it compresses data going into it. ZRAM typically compresses at around a 3:1 ratio, so if it's a 1.5/0.5 split the device will really perform like it's got 3GB of slow RAM (which is still a lot faster than swapping out to MMC). Having a faster cpu would help speed this up, which hampers this device some. This would go a long ways to explaining why the device just feels a little sluggish all the time but never really bogs down horribly. This is a pretty big deal for budget devices, and I hope to see it showing up in faster octa-core chipsets with 3GB of system RAM, where it could go a long way to making such a device actually pleasantly usable as a smartphone. The screen survived a drop from about 4' onto a tile floor. Not done on purpose for the review, it just slipped out of my hoodie pocket in a bathroom. Thankfully no worse for the wear since that was either day 1 or 2 with the phone. It does come with a clear rubbery case and a screen protector already applied. Now onto the good stuff about the device. The phone call quality was fine. The camera quality was fine and I'd go so far to say that it's downright good for this price point, though I used it sparingly during my week using the phone. There may be some conditions in which the camera would perform poorly. I never use face recognition on my other devices as I'd rather not introduce additional battery drain, but I tried it on this device since it's an advertised feature, and I was surprised at how well it worked. It told my wife that she had incompatible facial features when she tried to unlock it :) The device comes with a very spartan install of Android 12 Go. Less is better from the factory, in my opinion. I found out quite by accident that the bluetooth connection quality is really good. I had went into my house and set the phone down on my kitchen island while I had a headset on listening to a podcast. I puttered around doing a few things and ended up in front of my computer with the headset still on and the podcast is still going. I had forgotten and left the phone sitting on the island which was now two rooms and several walls away. The connection never hiccuped. I'm pretty sure it would have on my other phones. Umidigi happened to catch me at a good time, as I currently have two sim cards from two different carriers. Verizon (via Visible) and T-Mobile (via Mint) both worked fine on the phone and had LTE data connections. Both were able to pull down 20 something mbps, which is as good as I've seen on other devices in my area. USB tethering and wireless hotspot worked fine for both providers, though interestingly with some settings on my linux laptop I can bypass the Visible 5mbp tethering cap on my Android 10 Power 3, the same settings with this device does not bypass the throttle (which is still a healthy 5mbps). Finally, unlike the battery, the screen met my expectations and is the usual nice bright, crisp display I've come to expect in Umidigi devices. You won't struggle to see it outside during the day. It does have weird ambient light sensing, which might be why screen brightness auto adjust is disabled from the factory. You can turn it on, and it works, but it sets your screen too bright (in my opinion) and is very slow to react to changes in lighting. I stand by my earlier statement that this is not a phone, or a price point, I would normally shop for if I needed a new smartphone. However, it does do phone things just fine. It would be a good device for grandma or grandpa, or maybe somebody needing a secondary device just for tethering or a mobile hotspot (which is what it will be doing if I end up keeping it). The best bang-for-your-buck in unlocked budget smart phones that are actually pleasant to use as a smart phone will be around 2x this price point. ... show more

  • Good for what you pay.
Size: 2+32G Color: Galaxy Blue
Bottom line is, if you need a phone that works (and not much more), this is a great value. It's got some small annoyances, but it beats out paying 4-6 times as much if you don't need anything fancy. Runs Netflix, YouTube, and Maps mostly without issue. Camera is decent if you give it a few seconds to adjust. Came with a screen protector pre-installed. Positive(?) slogan on the backside for comedic effect brightens your day. Hardware is definitely underpowered- there's a bit of stuttering and lag with apps, so you'll need to be patient, and forget playing any kind of 3D game or application. Unusual audio/video stuttering during streaming can be an annoyance, but pausing for a second or two usually resolves it. Screen protector works, but is cheap and bubbles up a little where you get a scratch or ding on it; definitely recommend replacing with a higher-quality protector if you're rough with your phone. Speaker isn't quite as loud as other phones I've had, but it's usually loud enough. Battery life is enough to get you through a couple days, even with a few hours of streaming video, but it's risky not to charge it every night. Small annoyances with the OS: Dark Mode doesn't apply to some apps. Location is usually kept off, but the icon keeps popping up on the notification bar, which is worrisome. The interface has way more padding than it should regardless of font size chosen, making the whole interface seem crowded or zoomed-in. Alarms kept getting silenced because the Clock app kept getting its battery usage restricted no matter what permissions or settings were applied- finally stopped after messing with some things, but not sure what did it. Can't mute notifications for, or disable, proprietary hardware management app DuraSpeed. Can't get rid of or move the Google Search bar, though I think that one's Android's fault. What's not Android's fault though is the watermark on the camera which has to be manually turned off. ... show more

  • Excellent support and presentation
Size: 2+32G Color: Black
The G1 appears to be a solid entry-level basic phone with features like facial recognition, dual-SIM or SIM + micro SD card support and more, and represents great value for the price. My specific unit however, had two issues - it was very slow and wouldn't connect to my Canadian carrier, Chatr. The support team persevered and helped for an extended period of time until we finally decided to return the phone as it may be a defective unit. The rating therefore is a combination of my experience with the actual phone and the superlative efforts of the support team. I have been extremely happy with my other Umidigi phone (F1) and accessories (earbuds & watch). Based on that, I recommend Umidigi phones as fantastic value. ... show more

  • Basic phone with premium feel
Size: 2+32G Color: Black
Let's start with the positive aspects: Phone is beautiful. I love the style, and overall it looks sturdy and has a premium feeling. The screen is nice and bright, and the camera takes nice pictures for being in the low price range. Battery is also a great selling point. It supports most global LTE bands and has a dual SIM slot, meaning that you can use it pretty much anywhere in the world. On the bad note this is a very slow phone and you should not be expecting to be able to play games on it, use it for navigation, or install tons of apps. It can be used for making and receiving calls, text, email, basic internet browsing, and taking some pictures. if you are planning on using it for social media, or other resource intensive apps this phone is not the right one for you. If you can spend a little more I would recommend going with a phone with at least 4gb of ram and 128 gb of memory, like the umidigi F3 that has great specifications but is still affordable. ... show more

  • Basic phone
Size: 2+32G Color: Galaxy Blue
I gave this phone to my mother in-law. It takes time to connect to wifi. Most of the time when I video call her on the facebook messenger her camera doesn’t show right away which means the phone is slow even when the internet is fast. The volume is the worst. I got her earphones and still low. The battery life is good. I can’t return it because I got shipped to the Philippines. ... show more
