  • My kids love it
Such a cute little telescope! I got this for my teens and they were over the top having a telescope to watch the stars with. We live in a rural area so the stars are always out but it's even better when you can see them up close. The assembly was so simple that I had my teens put it together and they did it with no help from us. Everything from how to put it together and how to use it, was so simple. The tripod is very sturdy and light but it holds up the telescope very well; the whole thing is very light - like I can carry it with one hand light. It comes with lens holders and lens covers which is very nice and convenient to keep dust from getting in or around the lenses. ... show more

  • A great way to test enthusiasm/interest
I really love gazing up at the stars and the kids seem to enjoy it as well. We've talked about really getting into astronomy but it can be hard to find a common interest that everyone shares similar levels of enthusiasm for. This simple telescope is a good litmus test for if it sparks more desire to stargaze or if the past time is simply that. I actually found I preferred just gazing up comfortably, it is neat to get a sharper view but more relaxing to idly ponder the hazy celestial bodies. ... show more

  • Simple to Use, Not Heavy, Worked Great
I have two young children who are starting to become interested in the moon and stars, so I thought this would be a great educational product to use with them and expand their knowledge. Everything needed was included in the box, and the telescope itself is very light weight. I found the assembly instructions to be confusing and frustrating, and so relied on the picture on the box to figure out how to assemble the telescope. Assembly was actually pretty simple since there aren't that many pieces though. We decided to set up the telescope indoors and view the moon from our window - and it worked great. We could see all of the craters and many details of the moon. However, I found that even the slightest bump of the telescope caused it to move and required me to have to aim the telescope again, which was a bit inconvenient. Most importantly, my kids really enjoyed viewing the moon and this worked for what I intended it to. ... show more

  • Great first telescope
I got this for my 13 year old daughter. She set it up on her own and it is a great first telescope. It doesn't take up too much room and is very light.

  • Good starter telescope
This was the first telescope I’ve had in years and it was not super easy to use. It could be my lack of experience so I didn’t lower the rating. Once we were able to set it up, the view is beautiful.

  • For Beginners!!!
If you have a kid who has expressed interest in astronomy, this isn’t a bad place to start. As others have expressed, it doesn’t have the most stable of tripods and I think the phone mount is worthless. Since it is a beginner telescope, it only has two real focal lenses but it’s a good way of finding out if the person who is expressed an interest and astronomy is really interested. If they are, quickly move up to a better quality; if they aren’t, you’re not out that much money and you can pass this on to the next budding astronomer. I did not have any trouble assembling it, but I have had to assemble a lot of toys. This was no different than a transformer back in the day. I would agree that the tripod is just horrible, but you can use blocks to secure it in position. Someone complained it was not very good at night, it’s not the best lens I’ve ever seen, but you can see the moon and stars, much more visibly that you can with a cell phone or binoculars. Given the price, give it a try. There is always someone else who could use it If you’re young one decides it’s not their new passion. ... show more

  • Definitely a beginner's scope
I saw this scope was for children and beginners and although childhood is far in the rearview mirror, I am certainly a beginner. I was excited to get this because I have a home in the country where the night sky is full of stars. My initial reaction to this scope: frustration. As a beginner, I've never put a telescope together before and although I thought I knew how it should go together, I had a lot of doubt. The instructions didn't help ease those doubts at all. They were worthless for the most part. I had to watch the video on the Amazon site and also Google the brand to get comfort I was doing it right. After longer than it should have taken, I had it assembled (correctly). Next frustration is the tripod. I haven't successfully been able to keep the telescope in place. There is no tightening or locking mechanism, at least not that I've found, so when you let go of the handle, the telescope often shifts and you have to spend the time again to relocate the scope to find what you were looking at. The view itself isn't bad and you have to remember this is a beginner scope and it's not a pricey scientific instrument. In addition to star gazing, I like to use it for wild life spotting although by the time I get it focused, the wild life has often moved. Finally, the cell phone holder. What the heck is the purpose of this? Is it purely a holder or are you somehow supposed to line up the phone camera with the viewer for pictures? Don't look to the instructions for an answer to that question because you won't find one. And I still haven't. If it's just a holder, why put it where it gets in the way of your viewing? If it's supposed to work with the scope, then please outline how in the instructions. Overall, for the price, it's okay for a beginner although the frustrations it comes with may stop a budding astronomer from pursuing his/her interest any further. ... show more
