I have been using TurboTax for years. Year after year my feelings stay the same. It's a solid product, featuring a well designed and easy to use interface. It handles my tax needs, and offers a line of products that I can choose from each year depending on my tax reporting needs for that year. I still feel that the price is higher than what I would like for the versions I buy, but they do offer free filing services for those who have very basic reporting needs as well. I have tried a competitor one year, and it worked for me, but the user interface was not as friendly and required me to do more manual inputting than TurboTax. I also had to look up how to do some special form K-1 inputting in that program, whereas TurboTax had those features integrated and automated. So I went back to TurboTax and haven't ran into any issues. Their support forums are active, and the few questions I have had about my particular tax situations over the years were addressed specifically on their forums by others who were confused by the same situations.     • Best thing short of a CPA
If you have a simple tax return, standard deduction with a W-2 or two, then there are free options and no need to buy this. This is for more complicated situations with business income or rental properties or lots of investments etc. This gathers all the online information from your brokerage and populates the tax return. A CPA can help you save money by planning, but if it's too late for that, this will do the job and walk you through all of the possible areas.     • It’s tax software
I do my taxes with TurboTax every year. It allows me to import all my information from previous returns and put them into the new return. Also, I had to make a modified return this year because I made a mistake on the original. This also worked well for that as well. Hopefully, the IRS will not throw me in jail. ... show more

    • Turbo Tax works well when it works, there are sometimes glitches
I guess glitches are possible in just about anything; computer software is no exception. I have been using Turbo Tax since well before Intuit brought it into its line-up; since the first version of Macin-Tax. They have added features and versions, and when it works well it's good. When not, the tech support is sometimes excellent sometimes not. One of the most basic characteristics of any software is login and password; it should be easy to change a forgotten password, but I have gotten stuck in presumably endless loops with being timed out, waiting for codes, and other 'forgot password issues. For example, a screen asking something like "how do you want to reset your password" leads to a dead end that explains "why are we asking for your personal information?" At some point in the midst of hours of these endless loops (time outs, no code sent) I was directed to one of my "secret questions" - first car, favorite teacher, first pet, etc. - I answered it and Bingo I was up and running! The next time I had similar problems I couldn't get back there, and tech support didn't know how to get to the "answer your secret question" page. I have spent HOURS nearly throwing my computer out the window because of what **should** be easy. ... show more

    • The gold standard
For those of you who prepare your own taxes, this is the gold standard. One nice feature is that it transfers a lot of your information year after year, so you are not constantly retyping the same data. It also knows what you paid the previous year, and what, if any, refund you received. It prompts you about filling in data in the current year based on what you'd entered the prior year. I know that you get sort of locked into one brand or service this way, but it is helpful. You are able to electronically submit your tax returns, both state and federal, and also print a copy should you want to do that.     • Best way to do taxes for me at least!
I have a bit more of a complicated tax situation compared to most, as I am part of a LLP, so this is the edition I have used for the last 3-4 years. I'm very happy with it, the cost is a bit high, and sometimes I have gotten in situations where there was little info to find on how to do something properly (like last year trying to declare paypal & ebay sales which became a thing all of a sudden).     • Consistent with Previous Turbotax Years
More of the same in terms of the questions, and idiosyncracies about have to to "take longer than expected" to check for updates. We have 1Gb transfer rates, so it was not on our end. It does not file state tax electronically. That requires an additional payment, which was inconsistent with previous years. Other tax software is not much better. Once you use Turbotax, you either have to use it for following years or you have to retype all the previous years information in the new package. I bought it this year expecting to get a free state e-file. Nothing in the hit-you-over-the-head labeling warns you that it doesn'tinclude that. ... show more
