I have a German shepherd Husky mix and her strength is much larger than my 5’1’’ stature can handle. She’s is still learning how to walk without tugging and getting better, but having this leash on her really gives me a good grip on her when she does decide to tug and it is also comfortable at the same time. The leash also does not get twisted at all due to the wider width of the leash, even when retracted back into the body of the leash itself. My only con would be that the lock can get stuck at times especially if they are tugging and I have it shortened and locked. When I want to release the lock to extend it, somehow the lock and the push down mechanism gets stuck. Compared to my other leashes this one is the most comfortable to hold and gives me the most confidence when I walk my large dogs.

I bought the TUG retractable dog leash (size medium) for our Shetland Sheepdog three years ago. We have used it daily and with the kids walking the dog too, it has been put through the wringer. About a year ago, the lock became finicky which has significantly worsened over the past month, hence the reason for the four stars. I am not sure how long this type of leash is supposed to last but I feel three years of abuse is pretty good. It has been a great leash overall and I guess it has just worn out. We probably could have gotten the smaller size since our Sheltie is 30 lbs but I was afraid the handle might be too small and uncomfortable. The medium handle is easy to hold and not too heavy. The leash has started to fray and with the locking mechanism messing up more frequently, I will be ordering a new one.

Update: Tug kindly reached out to me and offered a full refund for the leash I purchased that started to tear, I’m giving them another shot and ordering the original! Thanks Tug for the great customer service. I really do love this leash (this is my 3rd one) I first owned the white style, which was perfect! I took it everywhere until one day it was time for a new one. I saw Tug came out with a new sleek black leash and decided to upgrade. Within a few months, the leash started fraying and coming apart, it would continuously get caught in the retractor and get stuck. I decided to buy a new one, hoping that it wouldn’t happen again, but yet it did I really want to love this leash, but if after a few months it does this??

We still use a 4/6 ft flat leash to walk our dog, but we bought the Tug 16' to give our guy a chance to roam when we take him to more open spaces. He is very good at coming back when called. As far as the leash, it is 16' and comes with a 1' extension making it 17' (not approximate. It seems well made and easy to use and lock in when needed. We have a 50 pound mongrel, he is pretty strong- so we did upgrade and buy for large breed, even though he probably would have been fine with a medium. Overall a good buy.

1/8/23 Edit: Tug contacted me and quickly rectified my issue with their leash. The process was smooth and simple. As a result, I've changed my review based on outstanding customer service! I bought the large version (rated for 100 lb+) for my 60 lb lab in January 2022. Fast forward to December 2022 and it has started to separate/weaken as pictured. I take my dog on 3 - 4 walks a day, short and long, and she doesn't put a lot of strain on the line. As for the pros, it's comfortable to hold, locks easily, and has a smooth reeling action. Overall, I'm disappointed it didn't last more than a year and I'd recommend buying a different brand.

The . “Tug” is working well. I was real happy with the extra 3’ lanyard included. The extra length allows our dog to walk with out any tension on her collar. She didn’t care for even the low tension spring in the retract mechanism but adding the short extension lanyard prevented her from feeling any pulling on her collar. And she is free to extend the leash whenever she fells like investigating. The lock latch mechanism is a little awkward form my arthritic hands and the leash doesn’t always fully retract but over all I’m very happy with the “Tug”

We purchased the Tug leash in Feb of 2022. Worked great. In the last couple of weeks, the retractable leash strap began to fray on the edges. It got so bad that it wouldn't retract properly. So we got scissors and trimmed it enough so it at least would work properly. It began to fray again, so I contacted Tug directly, just to let them know what was going on. They immediately emailed me back, and told me they are sending a new one. We didn't expect that, since we really used this leash a lot. Their customer service is excellent! I highly recommend this leash. Especially because they stand behind their products.

I have 3 dogs. a 95lbs pit mix, a 50lb boxer mix and a 75lb boxador and this works great for them. It stands up to simple walks or when they're trying to jerk. It holds up well. I feel that my dogs are safer with a stronger leash like this as I can control how far away they can get from me and how well I had hold them from trying to run after critters outside should they take the notion to do so.
