  • Great Tracker For the Price
Color: White
On my second year of using this tracker for my two female hound dogs. I live in a rural area on the edge of a national forest. My two dogs have a penchant for running off on little "adventures" that take them miles and miles from our home. They always come back but there are hunters, ranchers with cattle, a moderately busy scenic highway nearby, coyotes, etc. etc -- plenty of hazards. I got the tracker so that I could go out and run the little rascals down and retrieve them when they take one of these jaunts and it has worked well for that. If I can get within 500 - 1000 feet of them and whistle they will come right to me, with a "Gee, you're out here too? You should have come with us, it was great!" look on their faces. The only slight drawback is that the tracking is dependent on 1) cell phone coverage and 2) GPS reception. Since our area is remote, mountainous and heavily forested both of these can be spotty or even non-existent depending on where the dogs are. The result is that they drop off the map for some period of time and then re-appear when the tracker gets in range of a cell signal and/or GPS. This coupled with the sparse road network means that it can take some time to run them down but over the last two years I have managed to run them down every time they have taken off. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but that is not the fault of the unit --- it's the environment I live in. I've found that the location the unit gives is very accurate. Live mode works very well if you have a strong enough cell/GPS signal. The unit has saved me a lot of worrying and fretting. Before I got it I would have no idea at all where they were and I would just have wait (and hope) they would not get into trouble and would find their way back. BTW, these two must have a biological GPS built into them because after I got the tracker I found that they would go up to 5 miles away and cover a track of 15 miles or so in just a few hours! With the unit I can know, with assurance, that (for instance) "Oh, they're running down the power line right of way to the lake, no big deal" or "They're over at the Smith's ranch, probably chasing calves so I better get them". So now, if I worry, at least it's more informed worrying! : > The unit seems to be durable and waterproof. This is my second year with it and it's holding up well. My dogs come back covered in mud, water, cockleburrs, etc. The unit is scratched up a bit but otherwise no worse for the wear. Battery life is very good. In our wifi power saving zone the battery would probably last up to a week (guessing). Out of the power saving zone and with a lot of live mode tracking I would estimate that battery life would be 1 -2 days. Can't really say for sure because I charge the unit every night, just in case. My dogs are getting a bit older now and are less adventurous; this unit helped me get them through their adolescence and was certainly worth every penny for the unit and subscription! UPDATE: February 2025 The battery on the tracker that I purchased nearly two years ago degraded to the point that I would have to charge it every night. The charge would barely last 24 hours, less if I was using live tracking. A couple of times it went flat while I was still out looking for my dogs. So, I bought another one. The newer model has an updated charging arrangement that is a cradle that securely snaps on to the tracker. The older model had a cord with a magnetic socket that was easy to detach so you had to be careful when setting it down or the connection would be lost. So the new charging arrangement is definitely an improvement. The newer model has great battery life. So far I have gone 3 - 4 day (with a fair amount of life tracking in there) without it dropping below 50%. This better than I got when my first unit was new so perhaps Tractive has improved some of the inner workings too. So -- not a complaint at all. I got almost two years use out of the first tracker and I think that is quite good. Nothing lasts forever, all things wear out and for the price (less than $50) I consider this good longevity. Great product, at least for me, and I will definitely renew my subscription (for the third year) come March when it expires. ... show more

  • Peace of Mind. You won't be disappointed.
Color: White
I have two young dogs and got each a Tractive last year, when we first got them as puppies. I used Whistle trackers in the past with another dog, but was not satisfied with the reliability or speed of updates when tracking with it and wanted something better. I did a bit of research and decided Tractive sounded like a good option. I have been very happy with the units and with their solid reliability. The key to using them is to set your wifi home zone so you are not draining battery constantly. As long as you do that (and you are able to set multiple "home" zones), these can run one to two weeks at a time easily without recharging. My dogs got out this summer chasing deer through the woods at twilight runnning back into a swamp about a mile from our home. The terrain was very challenging, and they ran over 3 miles during their outing, before they separated with the smaller dog being unable to further navigate the deepening swamp. After going a bit further, the larger dog circled back and reconnected with the smaller one bringing them both back to us (where we had been calling for them unheeded for 15 mins). While this situation was not ideal, the good news was I could "see" where they were in real time on the Tractive app. I knew where to go looking if they did not come back and this gave me more confidence that they were not lost or out on the high speed county roads. We had another occassion when we left the pups in our outdoor fenced yard while we enjoyed dinner out with family about 90 mins from our house. One pup got out and my Tractive notified me promptly when she left the safe zone. I was able to get in touch with a neighbor who put her in our house safely to wait for us to get back home. That could have been a genuine disaster had I not known she had escaped and been able to manage it. The trackers are also very resistant to abuse. Our larger pup uses her mouth to enrourage her smaller accomplice in play, and the Tractive sticks off the collar making it an obvious place for her to grab. That Tractive has been chewed to bits on the outside, but still works great. I honestly am amazed at it's resiliance. The only thing I have had to replace is an aftermarket silicone sleeve that I use to attach hers to her collar. I recommend Tractive to anyone looking for a solid, reliable and inexpensive method to monitor their pet ... show more

  • Great to track wondering lab
Color: White
The Tractive collar has been perfect for our Black Lab that tends to wonder more than he should. It provides us peace of mind and allows us to locate him quickly when he is off chasing squirrels. We also love tracking his daily activity on the app to make sure he is getting enough daily exercise. The battery last 3 days between charges which for the prices is way better than we expected. Only downside is if it gets fully submerged, sometimes it needs to be recharged to track again. Would purchase again. ... show more
