  • Solid product and application that works. I trust it.
It works. I have the confidence in to allow my three month old whippet to run free rather than being leashed when we go hiking. She gets so much more exercise. And, I'm no longer freaked out if I lose sight of her. The application is intuitive and allows me to do everything I need. The app is reliable; it has worked every time, which was a requirement for me to trust it. (Good coding guys!, cause I judge most apps to suck.) After one day of use, I bumped up to the premium plan. UPDATE: problem with not staying in live mode seems to be a problem with the application. Repeatedly cannot find the dog and goes out of live mode when I start up. If I shut down the application (double click then swipe to stop the application ) and then bring it up again, it seems to work. Seems the coders have some work left to do. I still would not say that it sucks. The combined inaccuracy between my phone location and the device location has been about 50 feet max. In live mode, the updates lag about 60 seconds on average. It would be perfectly useful to find the dog if necessary. I have good LTE coverage where I live. I typically use it about four hours a day and it always has over 50% charge remaining. It's so useful and important to me, that I recharge it every night; I want a full charge on it if she runs off. I was skeptical and anxious about the clip on solution, but it appears to be a very solid design.( I actually trust that it won't come off.) The only glitches that I have noticed or as follows: Once, it identified the dog is being 200 feet away when I was next to the dog. This inaccuracy lasted for about three minutes. It seems like there are times when I start the live mode and look back three minutes later and see that it's no longer in live mode. After restarting it in live mode, this does not reoccur. Could be operator error. I would prefer more control in defining the virtual fence area. I took the time to write this review because I was so skeptical about finding a product that worked after reading so many bad reviews on all the gps products. I'm so happy with it. ... show more

  • Worthless, especially when you need it most
After my dog decided to bust out twice in one week, it was time to Neil Caffrey her butt and put a tracking device on her. It arrived. I charged it. 8 hours later, the battery only got to 96%, even though it says in the manual that charging takes 2 hours. Strike 1. I subscribed to the Basic plan, set up her Geo Fence, and took her for a walk. Her Geo Fence is our Culdesac. The smallest GeoFence it allows is surprisingly and frustratingly large. If your dog is a runner, distance is everything. We crossed the GeoFence. No notification. We kept walking. No notification. We were sauntering. We were nowhere close to the speed she'd be running if she got out. We kept walking. We got literally twice as far as the distance from our house to the boundary before it alerted me. Strike 2. Then I kept the app open while we walked. It did not update her location for 7 minutes. I watched as her location just stalled, even though it tracked my phone perfectly. We were walking together. I also tried "Live View" many times. It would say "Starting Live View" and then nothing would ever happen. We came home. We were 2 houses from her fence before it updated her location. We had almost completed the walk before it even told me where she was. We were well inside the house and sitting down before it alerted me that she was back in her safe zone. I came home and looked at the "activity map." We left our culdesac and then walked on 4 streets in a big sort of rectangle shape. It only maps the culdesac and the first street we were on. Once we left that street, turned, turned again, and turned yet again, there is no data and it only returned until we got back onto street one to finish the "loop." I upgraded to the "Premium" Plan because it claims to have faster, better tracking and network coverage. We took the exact same walk again. The results were even worse. We got even farther away before I was notified she was outside the zone. It took 9 and a half minutes to update her location. And the activity map was even less complete. The type of people who need this kind of device are pet owners of animals who are flight risks. Accuracy, distance, and time matter when you're tracking an animal. This device fails miserably on all 3. Don't rely on it to keep your babies safe. Update: this is even worse than nothing. I woke up to an alert that the dog was outside her perimeter. She was snoring right next to me. Later, when I was an hour away from home, I got an alert that she left her perimeter. Panicked, I asked a neighbor to go check. She was snoring her face off in the living room. We proceeded to get 5 or 6 more false alarms that day. Then, the battery died after just one day of use. This thing is worse than nothing. ... show more

  • Works well but could be improved.
I purchased this product on Amazon due to price, customer loyalty, and convenience immediately following a multi-hour hunt for our escaped Husky. I received no discounts or compensation from the vendor. In summary, this product works great. It is plenty accurate for its purpose. Occasionally, it will blip out beyond a feasible location for our Husky to have ventured, but not more than 20-30 feet and never during live tracking. I am very impressed. We do have clear desert skies and good At&t cell coverage, so we are likely a best case environment. I was able to recently live track our pup down to the meter when she got out and we collected her in minutes vs hours of searching. I would say this is a must have device for Husky owners. For us the battery has lasted 2-3 days on a charge, as we turn it off at night when our pup is inside. Overall, it has proven to be worth the money and has lived up to the positive reviews. I chose it over the Whistle due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews of Whistle support and accuracy. I don't have a Whistle to compare it to, but so far i think i have made the right choice based on performance and customer support. It is not perfect though. One star off, as I am not a fan of the mounting method or charging clip. Though it may be a convenient and cost efficient way to waterproof the charging port, the clip charge mechanism seems brittle and is a pain to connect (the unit must be fully removed to charge). I have doubts about its longevity. Though I appreciated that they include two sizes of collar mounts, I feel the mounting method is frustraring, as you must remove the whole clip assembly from the collar to charge the unit or clean it, which allows for possible clip break or loss. A better mounting method that leaves the base on the collar and more accessible or better yet wireless charging would be awesome. I also don't care for the glossy plastic housing. It scratches easily and i am concerned about durability if it gets dropped or bumped (Tractive Care Replacement plan eases my mind slightly). I would prefer a rubberized housing. As someone who is happy with the devices technical performance, i would be willing to spend a bit more on the unit next time if an upgraded device resolves these issues. The App is intuitive and works well. I like that it overlays Google maps and provides a Satellite image view. This made it possible to even see what driveway gate our pup was exiting at the neighbors house for rapid intercept. In future updates, I would like to see battery status more prominently displayed on the home screen, perhaps as a colored ring around the pet icon, as needing to go into the pet profile to see it is tedious. Lastly, I am not a fan of the prepay system for any subscription level above basic, that is not well explained or advertised. I like the product and signed up for the replacement insurance as well as the top tier monthly plan, but as it was billed up front with only 14 days to cancel if there is an issue, it made me decline any longer than the 1 year payment plan. The pay by the year method ensures r&d and maintenance dollars are in place year long, and i do understand it from a business perspective, but the 14 day cancellation window seems too short for such a long up front commitment. 30-60 days seems more reasonable. For prospective buyers, check the plan costs before purchasing because as they are prepaid, it makes the devices initial cost 2-3x its stated purchase price alone. 1 year premium service with replacement plan was $96.47 USD for us. ... show more

  • Good all around tracker for your pets!
I have EIGHT of these—for four dogs. They are the best I’ve found, not perfect, but pretty good. I initially had TAGG/Whistle trackers, but when they changed their design to one requiring wireless technology they essentially shut me (and everyone else not living “in the city and having strong wireless coverage” ) out. Their new “Whistle Go” is the same. The 2G trackers I have will no longer be operational on Nov. 3. Thus, I found and changed to TRACTIVE Trackers. The Good: Battery Life is about 48 hours, wish it were better, but this is rural Oklahoma, so.... They are waterproof, the usage charge isn’t too bad, all things considered. The clip is ok, but I have made little “sleeves” that I put over the trackers to further secure them. They are pretty darn accurate...but know that the occasional glitch happens (showing your pet MILES away) so don’t have a heart attack, take a deep breath and track them again. It usually happens in bad weather and rights itself fairly quickly. The Bad: I do wish Tractive had a US based 800 number for questions/ problems. They are in Austria and EVERYTHING must be resolved by email. And those folks are off on weekends. So you wait. In the several years I have used these trackers they have gone off line twice. Both were over the weekend and their FAQs were useless. Both times were due to providers. It was very inconvenient, but worse, there was NO communication from Tractive letting its customers know what was going on-that was a problem for me. Shoot us a blanket email, for heavens sake! So- for the most part I am pleased with the product and will use them if and until I find something better. And they really are pretty good, I have come to depend on them and my dogs are Livestock Guardians and they have access to a couple hundred acres. Tractive has told me that their “TractiveExtra” should be available in the US early next year. Longer battery life!!!! ... show more

  • Works Pretty Well Sometimes But Frustrating at Other Times
March, 2018 I have had this about a month and am thinking of returning it. I just ordered the Whistle 3 and will compare. The Tractive GPS 3G Tracker seems to work but is a bit frustrating at times. I take my dog hiking and bring my cell phone. He runs off a little ways in the woods. I press "Live" and watch it spin and spin. It eventually stops spinning and there is still no update. I press "Live" again with the same results. Maybe one out of five times does it finally go to live and I get an update as to where he is. When it does update, it seems quite accurate. Alas, after five minutes, it automatically stops live updates to save battery life. You guessed it: I've got to press "Live" again! During this frustrating time, my dog returns to me and I check the status of the tracker. You can press the button for one second and the LED will blink twice either red or green. Once to tell you whether you are connected to the cell network, and again to tell you whether it has the GPS signal. It blinks green and green. So why doesn't "live" mode work? I checked multiple times and it was always green and green. It does update periodically even when it is not in "live" mode, and if he is moving, sometimes it tracks him quite well. So I'm not giving up on it yet. He has also gone swimming a number of times with it on and rolled in the mud until the unit was caked with dirt. Back in the water to rinse it off. Still shows green and green, so pretty robust. I also like it that I can use a web browser on my laptop whereas Whistle 3 only works with a cell phone. It has a few quirks that I can live with: -- Connecting the tracker to the dog's collar is difficult and not robust. It hasn't come off yet, but it seems like it could. -- Connecting the charger to the tracker is quite hokie. -- After it is charged, the unit is ON. I didn't realize this and let it sit on my desk for a week. Next time I went hiking, the battery was dead. Now I know to turn it OFF after it has charged. -- You have to keep pressing "Live" to get faster updates (as explained above). I think this would be OK if it would connect more easily. I will try and update this after I get the Whistle 3 and have time to test it out. ... show more

  • Brilliantly simple, amazing tracker!
I don't write many reviews but wanted to give Tractive as much support as I can: this tracker works, is dead simple to setup, and the Android app shows the pet's track & location drawn on a Google map of the vicinity, updated every few seconds in live tracking mode. Without live tracking the pet's location is captured every few minutes. The integration with Google maps in the app means that the terrain view can be turned on, showing houses, terrain features ... And the pet's path through it all. Really useful! When I'm concerned over not seeing my dog in a while I turn on live tracking and watch him meander. When first getting used to it I was following dogFace but lost track of him. The app showed he'd looped around behind me - and so he was when I turned around. I went for the top option in cell service for the reason that one bonus is that it seems to work with more cell carriers ... Details were lacking but I didn't want to lose tracking if the cell landscape changed in my neighborhood, or on the road. It worked out to about $8/month. Peanuts compared to the worry this is saving me. Edit: I watched the live track of stationary dogFace and it showed some diagonal jitter centered around his location. At other times it has drawn a rough dog where he was resting. Put it down to the # GPS satellites available to the tracker, where he was situated ... Still 5 stars, still really impressive for something the sizeof a key fob. ... show more

  • Utter trash, over $100 wasted, horrible service, total scam
This product is an absolute lie at every level. It does nothing advertised. Our dog was getting out of the fence nightly, so we went looking for a collar tracker that would alert us when he left the property and help us find him once gone. We live in an urban area, lots of neighbors with other dogs and a fairly busy street at the end of the block so it's really important to keep him in the yard so he's safe and not a nuisance to others. Also, plenty of cell coverage, etc to presumably support geolocation services. As advertised, this product seemed to tick all of our boxes; virtual fence, alerts if he left the fence, active gps location, alexa integration to help with alerts and location. All totally worthless. GPS tracking - wildly inaccurate. The first evening out of the box, after fully charging and going through the full setup process (including a $100 one-year subscription purchase which I'll get more in to later) we decided to test the tracker. I clipped the tracker to his collar and we went for a brief, but slow drive around the block while my wife monitored on her laptop and I with my phone. The entire time the app tracked my phone totally accurately, but at no point in our round-the-block trip did it find the tracker. Bummer. Maybe it was because it was in the car. OK, I'll drive around again, this time while holding the tracker out the window. Still nothing. The "Live Tracking" app finally found the tracker once I was about a half mile from the house. How could that possibly be useful? Maybe I went too fast on these nice, short residential streets or the metal from the car interfered, or some other stupid reason. OK, wife is going to walk down the street with the dog. Nada. They were an entire block away when I finally got the alert that he had just then left the virtual fence. Speaking of which, no where in their advertising do they mention that they have a minimum size to their fence of 2000 feet. That's almost a half mile. They say you can set it up so their stupid virtual fence encompasses your yard, but I don't know a lot of people with a half mile yard, especially in the city. Worthless. And the square formatted fence is even larger. Centered on our house, the fence extended almost three entire properties on either side of us. So, if he got out, and the GPS actually worked, we wouldn't even know until he was three houses away in any direction. Ok, back to the horrible GPS. So after testing this crap out and realizing it is in fact a total crop product, we settle down for the evening, chilling on the couch with our noble hound dozing under a blanket between us. Suddenly, an alert to both of our phones! He's left the fence and is cavorting in the park nearby! Nope, he's actually gently snoring at my feet. Let's try the vaunted Live Tracking feature, maybe ots just taking a while to calibrate or something and once this gets sorted all will be well! 30 minutes later Live Tracking still can't actually find him, but it still thinks he's in the park. I just checked the app again and now it thinks he's at the gas station down the other block. Nope, the useless tracker is on the table next to me. Now the subscription fee. In order to set this thing up, you have to pony up $100 bucks minimum for a yearly service fee. It's advertised as monthly, but you have to pay the whole year up front. Cancel anytime of course. But no refunds. So here I am, packing this piece of trash back up to send back, but I ain't getting that $100 back apparently, even though we decided in less than 5 hours that it was totally worthless. Customer service? Nope. An email address with an auto-reply that you've contacted them out of business hours (3 pm EST on a Wednesday) and due to an abnormally high volume of emails someone will try to get back to you someday. I'm not holding my breath. In short, don't waste your time or money. This thing is a total scam. We'll be contacting the Better Business Bureau and leaving more reviews like this wherever we can to get our subscription money back, but again, I'm not holding my breath. ... show more

  • I regret this buy
I really regret this buy. Amazon was great, as usual, and the process on their end was quick and simple. Beyond that is where the problem is. First, make sure you read the fine print. Maybe I’m just naive and don’t pay attention to detail, but I had no clue when I bought it that you had to buy a whole other subscription just to use the tracker and it’s features. I think they’re 3 different plans to choose from and they’re all yearly subscriptions. Meaning you pay the whole amount up front for the year. I think I paid close to $100 for the plan I chose...on top of the cost of the tracker itself. Secondly, the Tractive company is located on a different continent, so activating the tracker was a nightmare and it eventually locked my debit card. It’s a security feature on my card. And third, IT DOES NOT WORK RIGHT! One of the features on the app is that I get alerts if my dog goes outside of the ‘virtual fence’ (perimeter you can set around your home with the app). Well this alert is ALWAYS popping up on my phone. Sometimes it’s great and the accuracy is amazing. Sometimes I’ll get the alert and my dog is sitting next to me on the couch (not in the yard across the street like his tracker says he is). Sometimes I get an alert and I look and he’s in my backyard...well within the perimeter I set. And don’t get me started on battery life 🙄 It lasts a day...maybe a day and a half. I don’t know if it’s something wrong with just mine, or if there is some kind of interference around my home that messes with the signal, but I personally WOULD NOT recommend buying this. Find any other brand, and go with it. ... show more
