Description

Enter a spectacular world of whimsy, fun and fantasy in this acclaimed visual extravaganza directed by Barry Levinson. Robin Williams stars as Leslie Zevo, a fun-loving adult who must save his late father's toy factory from his evil uncle (Michael Gambon), a war-loving general who builds weapons disguised as toys. Aided by his sister (Joan Cusack) and girlfriend (Robin Wright), Leslie sets out to thwart his uncle and restore joy and innocence to their special world. There are two reasons to see Toys: some phenomenal visual spectacle and the utterly adorable performance of Joan Cusack. The story: When the founder of the Zevo toy factory dies, he leaves it to his militaristic brother Leland (Michael Gambon) instead of to his whimsical son Leslie (Robin Williams). When Leland starts making war toys (and worse, actual weapons masquerading as toys), Leslie is forced to stop being capricious and take on some authority. Toys is supposedly about innocence and peace, but really it's director Barry Levinson's cry of anxiety about modern-day playthings, particularly video games--which is almost psychic of him, given how video games have started to devour the entertainment market. Fans of Williams will enjoy his performance; the visual design really is gorgeous; and Cusack, as Leslie's sister Alsatia, is so lovely she almost carries the film through its muddled themes. Almost. --Bret Fetzer

  • Excellent (and underrated) Film with a Message Even More Relevant Today.
This is one of those films that can be viewed on multiple levels. Taken as-is, or in the most basic level, it almost seems like a somewhat quirky children's film. Look a little deeper and you will find a message, and the reason people love or hate the film. It may have been released in 1992, but its message is perhaps more relevant 25 years later..That is only one of many (casting choices, performances of cast members, etc.) why this film deserves a full 5-stars. Not sure why the price trippeled in seven years, but this review is based, in a small part, on the $9.49 price I paid about seven years ago. Even at $30, it is worth the price. ... show more

  • This is one of my all time favorite movies for Christmas
This is one of my all time favorite movies for Christmas. The theme is loosely based on Christmas toys and the value of childhood meaning happiness in simplicity. Robin Williams shines as a happy go lucky heir to millionaire father who passes away and leaves the toy company to his son. The uncle, a retired military commander wants to make war toys, and vies for possession of the company. When Robin's love interest shows support, he kicks his fight back into high gear and beats the war toys with old fashioned ones in a battle of fire versus fur. Quirky soundtrack, bright beautiful scenery and a robot sister make this film unforgettable! A must for family, rated PG due to a few off-hand slightly naughty commentary. ... show more

  • I love this movie
I love this movie, and I love the original soundtrack. Now I can jam out to "Happy Workers" on my way to my soul-sucking office job. :D

  • I liked it....
I was quite surprised to see 48 reviews for this obscure movie. I know it is a "love it or hate it" film, but I have to admit I am in the former group. I first saw this movie while spending the night in a hotel in Garmisch, Germany; and I was so drawn into it I put off dinner (hard for me to do with the excellent food in Germany) until it was over. I can understand why a lot of people are disappointed with this movie, it isn't the normal Robin Williams performance. If you are expecting 'Mork and Mindy' then go rent 'Mrs Doubtfire.' I am sure some are appalled over the fact that there is a message in this movie as well, we want to see robin act like the clown prince, not tell us that violent toys are bad! However, if you can get past those two points, you are in for one of the best abstract movies of the past decade. I am glad a majority of the reviews are in favor of this movie, it may not have made a lot of money at the box office but it is cinematic art. ... show more

  • Completely Underrated movie - extremely creative and very funny.
This movie is under-rated. Robin Williams and Joan Cusack do a great job as does LL Cool J. The green field scenes were filmed outside Pullman, WA and they actually painted the wheat and grass green for the movie. My kids enjoy this movie along with everything else that Robin Williams has done.

  • Criminally under-rated
I'm not sure why this movie did not earn more praise from critics or do better at the box office, but despite that? This is one of the most unique and memorable films you'll ever enjoy watching and I recommend it. Robin Williams, Joan Cusack, LL Cool J, and Michael Gambon all turn in marvelous performances, the sets are imaginative and breathtaking, the soundtrack will haunt you for days, and the story is a refreshing change of pace from routine Hollywood offerings; how many other films have characters attending their father's funeral in a bumper car? ... show more
