  • This book offers almost all the fundamentals that help us to generate art from the visual world.
Before I start learning about glazing, about mediums or about coping in my canvas whatever actual exist in front of my ayes ( which is demonstrated perfectly for example in Josheph Sheppard's “Bringing textures to life” ) I have to learn to exclude to arrange and to simplify in terms of value, color, line and composition. One must learn to artistically understand the reality which unfolds in front of his ayes before he tries to artistically interpret it. This book offers almost all the fundamentals that help us to generate art from the visual world. The writer accomplish this by using simple and cohesive texts and by the reproduction of paintings which offer much more than it is implied by the straightforward manner with which they were made. It complements perfectly with Gurney's book “Color and Light”. It seems that the watercolor expertise of the writer has passed to his oils offering to his style an intimate simplicity of forms and a unique radiation of the rendered light. I wished he had included some watercolors to. For a beginner like me delving into this book is a necessity and I will be consulting it for a long time. ... show more

  • The best book for beginners and advanced painters alike.
Tom Browning, in his book Timeless Techniques for Better oil painting, explains his straightforward and basic approach to oil painting. He explains his working process in a very logical and understanding manner. With no frills or ego Mr. Browning teaches the basics of representational painting and how to put a painting together from start to finish. I have been painting for over 20 years and still recommend this book to all of my students as the one to start with to really understand how to see as an artist sees. It's a must in every painter's library. ... show more

  • Browning offers works that are excellent renditions and his helpful hints are made clear and ...
I just purchased this book, even though it was written in 1994. I am attempting to develop a more painterly style after years of precise (albeit painful) photorealism through glazing techniques. Mr. Browning offers works that are excellent renditions and his helpful hints are made clear and concise. However, I was not personally as motivated as I would have liked to have been by the main subject matter, mainly pioneer women. I lost interest quickly as this is not my 'cup of tea'. As a typical artist, I am very visual and if I am not captivated by the work I become restless and I move on (I am also ADD lol). I do like that the artist is not afraid to reveal that he has times when he is fallible in his renderings and I found this to be not only endearing, but relatable in so many ways. I am endeared to Mr. Browning for his humility and ability to remain teachable, as we all should as artists. He writes of his mistakes and how he corrects them. I would love to see more current works and wish I could attend a workshop or two to learn more, hint, hint. (I live just across the border). I would recommend buying the book simply for learning about his refined painterly style and selection of color. ... show more

  • Very educational book by a wonderful artist
Format: Hardcover
Tom Browning gave concise lessons, with plain language, easily understood. His illustrations alone are worth buying the book for. The lessons on color are very good. Wish I had owned it years ago!

  • Great Foundation
Format: Hardcover
Great place to start or to gain some in depth understanding for oil painting.

  • One of the best
This book succeeds where so many other oil painting books fail. This book is like one of those diamonds in the rough. It doesn't have many reviews and is not well known. But Boy does it deliver the goods. Every instruction from edges to color to composition is nicely laid out and clearly explained. Although my painting style is slightly "tighter" than the author's, the same principles apply. get this book before you buy any other and you'll see what I am talking about.I wish I found it earlier I own a ton of books that try, but this one delivers. ... show more
