Description

Restless sixty-nine year old Sharon Waters buys an RV, leaves everything behind except her devoted pets, and embarks on a solitary journey akin to the proverbial wandering in the desert. Her three-year trip along harrowing highways and in freezing parking lots tests her strength, ingenuity, and resilience. She digs deep into her personal marrow, meets many, and learns much along the way, but mostly it’s a search for herself. This inspiring memoir relates a wealth of practical knowledge and tells a cautionary tale for those new to RV living. For more experienced travelers, she shares familiar insights as well as ordeals they may wish to avoid. Throughout her venture, the author is comforted by her steadfast companions, two Schipperke dogs, Magic and Cricket, and a cat named Milo. By the end of her journey, Ms. Waters finds that for all her focus on RV improvement and maintenance, it’s her self- esteem and confidence that gain the most from her challenging odyssey. Her quest becomes less about reaching her destinations and more about achieving a peaceful state of mind. Read more

  • Extraordinary and amazing journey of self discovery
Format: Kindle
Wow...what a brave and daring journey. Goes to show how you can be forced to take steps to find or better yourself, only to come out on the other side a better version of yourself. Serendipity? It's refreshing to know how much us seniors are capable of. Especially, when we're stuck with the misconception that life after 60 is pretty much downhill. Sharon's journey proves there is always room for improvement if it is what you desire. The sky is truly the limit. It makes me sad that she eventually had to settle down and stay put. No longer a free bird. No longer an adventurer. But I'm happy she had the opportunity to meet good people, explore the east coast, but mostly become a better person. I am so glad I got to go on this amazing journey with you, Cricket Magic, and of course Milo! ~ a former RVer whose dreams of being a forever wanderer never came true ... show more

  • Three interesting years!
Format: Kindle
The first two-thirds of the book really kept my interest. The final one-third a bit less, but I did enjoy reading about her travels and accompanying challenges. Good for her!

  • Three Years in a Walmart Parking Lot.
Format: Kindle
Fun reading. Great escape. More about her visiting different friends and the challenges of maintaining a RV. Not alot of other content.

  • Enjoyable travel story.
Format: Kindle
A fun read of a mature lady deciding to flip her lifestyle and get an RV and travel. It’s a real world story, forgetting things like insurance and registration for a bit, but amazingly few major calamities. And she learns every mile driven and Walmart visited. Enjoyable.

  • Very interesting read!
Format: Kindle
I dowloaded this book on a whim yesterday, and finished it this afternoon. I could totally empathize with the author -- I am in my very late 60's and have dreamed of taking to the road and just vagabonding around the country as she did. When my husband and I go from Indiana to Massachusetts or to Texas, or in the past from one military post to another, we rarely stay in hotels but in parking lots or rest stops (when we could get away with it). We are scout leaders so our "roughing it" skills are honed and I could easily see myself (or us), taking off for the open country. Fascinating and instructional in a conversational way. ... show more

  • Love This Book!
Format: Kindle
I read this in two days and have told several friends to buy it. This woman is my hero. The author takes a leap of faith and chronicles the good and the bad aspects of it. It's an interesting read and says a lot about cultural expectations of women, aging and our changing society. It's a no nonsense self discovery. I especially enjoyed reading about her growing into her role and learning how to fix her rv, how to conserve power in the rv and how she found herself out on the road. Milo will be my next purchase and I am hopeful she will continue to write about her world. I hope she still has purple hair! ... show more

  • Worth the read!
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed reading this. I especially liked that the Traveler was in HER 70s. I can relate to much of her experience, but as always, not all. Finally someone who adopted life on the road who had some common sense as well as bravery and life given desperation! She was very up front and honest about her life. It was one of the things that made it a good book. I'm recommending it! ... show more
