Description

BAFTA-winning actor, voice of everything from Monkey to the Cadbury's Caramel Rabbit, creator of a myriad of unforgettable characters from Lady Whiteadder to Professor Sprout, Miriam Margolyes, OBE, is the nation's favourite (and naughtiest) treasure. Find out how being conceived in an air-raid gave her curly hair; what pranks led to her being known as the naughtiest girl Oxford High School ever had; how she ended up posing nude for Augustus John as a teenager; why Bob Monkhouse was the best (male) kiss she's ever had; and what happened next after Warren Beatty asked 'Do you fuck?' From declaring her love to Vanessa Redgrave to being told to be quiet by the Queen, this book is packed with hilarious stories. With a cast list stretching from Scorsese to Streisand, a cross-dressing Leonardo di Caprio to Isaiah Berlin, This Much Is True is as full of life and surprises, as is its inimitable author. • Boasty McBoastface
Miriam Margoyles wants you to know she’s Jewish and a lesbian, and has pleasured half the men in England with her hands and mouth. Also, that she’s a very talented actress. And she is. Despite having to skip some passages that blathered on endlessly about career minutiae, I gave this book five stars because it’s highly entertaining. So is Miriam, who doesn’t need anyone to tell her. ... show more

  • Ok read
Bought this because I’ve been a fan of hers and her work. The book is bit boring and she’s very obsessed with her “encounters” with men. Honestly if you’re thinking of buying book wait until it’s in paperback form it’ll be way cheaper, it’s not worth more than $5 to read it. Sorry to say.

  • Interesting & Funny
Thought the book was an excellent read with many laugh out loud moments. Miriam gives you a good overview of her life --- both good & bad experiences. Well worth your time!

  • Hmmm
I am in two minds about this book. On the one hand, I appreciate Miriam Margolyes's frankness and openness. On the other hand, however, so many anecdotes and comments left such a bad taste in my mouth. First, Miriam says in the book that her mum always said that unless you have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. But then she proceeds to trash talk lots of people and make many wild and potentially damaging claims which are impossible to verify. Second, the constant stream of information about all the men Miriam sucked off or offered to suck off or failed to suck off gets old really fast. Maybe a couple of mentions would raise a slightly amused smile on some readers' faces, but pages and pages about sucking off are just unnecessary. Finally, Miriam's need for attention and shocking her audience/readers seem...clinically concerning? She constantly mentions how loved and happy she felt as a child by her parents, but you quickly see how toxic the relationship with her mother was and still is, despite her mum passing away in (I think) 1976. Miriam also believes that her coming out is what caused her mother's health issues and subsequent death. That must be a heavy burden to carry. Overall, despite several funny bits, this was a deeply depressing read. Miriam Margolyes seems like a little child, unloved, helpless and incessantly screaming for attention. But in the body of an 81-year-old woman constantly either offending others or offering to suck someone off. ... show more

  • This Much is True... A great read!
Her face is what got me to choose this book. She looks a little ornery and I like ornery.

  • Potty mouthed and proud of it!
This is a rollicking memoir, which I very much enjoyed. Ms. Margolyes is an actor who lives life on her terms. She dishes on famous actors, swears, talks about sex, swears, discusses politics and, did I mention swearing.? Full disclosure, I'd never heard of Miriam Margolyes but read this book based on Goodreads reviews. I adored it and must now be off to begin watching Call The Midwife, in which she plays a nun. ... show more

  • Candid, funny and definitely racy!
Miriam tells her story, with great detail, and uses language as an asset for complete descriptions. She is at times, painfully honest, funny, amusing and a little slutty. I never laughed out loud, but did smile much through the book. Thank you for your contribution to humanity, Miriam, the world is a better place with you in it. ... show more

  • A bit like Marmite
For those that don't know , Marmite is a yeast spread that Kiwi's (and others) put on their toast and sandwiches. It's intensely flavoured and a little goes a long way. Pile it on too thickly or eat it too often and it can be , well, just a bit much. I was reminded of this when reading this autobiography. Here is a person whose personality is so strong and so outrageous , that ultimately it palls to read about it. There is no doubt that Miriam is an incredibly talented person and if you can get past the Marmite factor , you will probably enjoy this. It's well written , well paced ( the timeline's a bit all over the place , but it doesn't matter) and there are enough names that you HAVE heard of to make it interesting. You do come away feeling like you know her better which is a plus in my opinion. So many of these celebrity autobiographies seem to rely on the "and then I did this" and then I did that" format , which generally results in you feeling like you really haven't learnt anything about them. I often thought I would love to have her on my Ultimate dinner party guest list. I still would but perhaps just for dessert ! ... show more
