  • Interesting Story
This is a fascinating, first person account of tending to the war's wounded during the Civil War. I enjoyed it greatly.

  • Must read for Whitman during Civil War
This is an amazing insight into Walt Whitman and his time with wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Wonderful letters!

  • great insight into hospital conditions
Whitman gives great insight into the conditions of the Civil war medical community. However not being a Whitman scholar I did not relate to the family news in his letters. I doubt I will do any research to answer those questions as that aspect of the book was not very compelling.

  • Interesting Account
Whitman's world must have been something very foreign to ours. Without employment he volunteered as a medical assistant in Washington City hospitals caring for the wounded, diseased and dying. He'd raise funds and bring them small gifts that seemed to raise spirits. Talk about public service!!

  • Amazing -a Wondrous Read
Amazing number of letters detailing daily life in Washington DC during Civil War overshadowed by the unbelievably generous giving caring person of the man Walt Whitman. I think more people should know the man instead of the poet. A lesson to us all in how to be good human beings. Although a little repetitive, it is a gripping read ... show more

Reflections of a battlefield medic. Pretty gruesome, especially if you understand how horrific the Civil War was. It's one of the reasons the US was so slow getting into other wars, with the scars of that conflict still fresh. This is a fairly romantic take on things. In that the battlefield medic seems to speak with an almost loving longing for the dying soldiers. It creates a sort of hopeless tone, as we wait for both the passage of history and of the verse. This poem is in the public domain. You can find a free etext at Gutenberg.org, or a free audio production at Librivox.org. ... show more
