  • Real life, death, and learning to go forward
I would be interested to know the demographics of the people reading this book. Are any contemporaries of Miss Dawson reading it? What do they think about it? Is anything new to them? Do they identify with a particular character? What do they think about Pa? Just asking, won't know, curious. I know I was impressed by Miss Dawson and her writing. Her plotting, descriptive ability, and dialogue are quite good. The book read smoothly, except where editing errors were missed. Those errors, especially from a professional, dropped my rating one star. The most outstanding thing about this book, to me, is the the loving character of the oldest sister. She was empathetic, unselfish, willing, and put all that into everything she did. Was she a saint? No, she tired, she grieved, she doubted herself, but endeavored to not burden her sisters with these things. Where did learn these qualities and how to put them to use? From her own mouth she tells us, her mother. Now I ask myself the same questions about the young writer, Morgan. I have to give the same answer, her mother. Now, I don't know this family, so don't go thinking this review is some underhanded attempt to plug both mother and daughter. These are my thoughts as I reflect now and as I was reading the book. To see a young girl be able to write with integrity about character in the way she has, gives me hope. Hope that there are many more young people who hold these same values and are trying to live by them. That is my favorite thing about this book. Hope. ... show more

  • I LOVE HOW WE CAN ALL MANAGE WITH JUST THE SUPPORT OF EACH OTHER
I enjoyed this extremely emotional and heartfelt story, and I am extremely impressed with the author. Ms. Morgan Dawson has spun a tale of family, life, hardship, despair, unity, and determination. Being a reader and reviewer of over 800 books per year, this young lady has accomplished more in her first novel at thirteen years of age than authors that can lay claim to multiple books. Her writing takes the reader to a harsher time in life; where she captures life on a homestead, a father with wanderlust to move to another state, the loss and grief this family feels when they lay their mother in the ground and watch their father lock himself inside his sorrow. Even in death, life must go on, and Darlene, being the oldest, pulls her four sisters together to do their best to keep the farm running. Though tragedy and loss try to imprison this family, their resilience is stronger. The plot of this story is packed full of emotions and takes the reader on a ride of highs and lows, from joy to sorrow, to despair and hope. The characters are well developed; the storyline is told in such a way you can imagine and envision what you are reading. The five daughters are the backbone of this story, how they rally around each other, their dialog is open and honest, even if sometimes what they say in truth hurts. “Always be kind Darlene and don’t judge someone by who they seem to be when you first meet them—they could have a hidden story that you know nothing about.” Wise words from a mother to a daughter. ... show more

  • The Wagon
This is a sweet, clean western romance written, believe it or not, by a 13 year old young woman by the name of Morgan Dawson. It is a story of five sisters that lost their mom and their dad was so broken-hearted that he withdrew from life, basically, and it was left to the girls to run the farm. When they learned that the mortgage on the farm was in jeopardy of foreclosure they didn't know what they were going to do. After a few days of thinking and talking it over Darlene, the oldest sister, decides she will go into town to sell a few things and buy some supplies. She sets out alone, planning to be gone a couple days. I don't want to tell the whole story, but the first night she pulls off the road and just as she is falling asleep she hears some rustling in the bushes. Long story short, it turns out to be a young man named Robert, who is also heading to town. In the morning they decide to travel together. They become better acquainted and Robert agrees to accompany Darlene back to the farm to see if he can help with the foreclosure situation. There is more to this story, and it has a HEA ending and leaves you with a good feeling. I am impressed with Miss Dawson's ability to write a story like this. It shows wisdom, thoughts and feelings I wouldn't expect to find coming from one so young...and I mean that as a compliment! I'll be looking for future books from this young author. ... show more

An amazing book written by a 13 year old girl. There was only one scene in the entire book that reminded me how young the author was. The rest was very mature indeed.

  • The Wagon
This particular book was such a warm and heartfelt story, especially since it was written by such a young and new author. I was able to imagine what life would have been like so many years ago, when a husband loses the love of his life to illness while having children to raise. Does he ignore them completely? Does he suffer in silence? Does he turn to alcohol? Does the eldest child take on the raising of siblings and home? What happens when the bank decides there is not much time left to make a loan payment? To read about the events of a loving family in this situation, especially, from a young woman's view, gives the reader many things to think about. I loved the book from start to finish and did not want to stop reading until I found out what happened next. I completely loved this story and highly recommend it as a MUST read for all ages, especially all those young teenage girls/women that believe they know what life entails. Great job by this new author!! ... show more

  • The Wagon
I received a free copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. I loved this story about Darlene and her family. Their Father goes into a deep depression after the Mother dies. Darlene takes over the care of her four sisters and with the help of Robert who she met on a trip to town manage to save the farm. It is hard to believe that a 13 year old girl is the author of this book. She wrote an interesting story that I could hardly put down until I finished it. She writes better than some seasoned authors. I highly recommend this wonderful story, and I look forward to reading more of her books. ... show more
