  • We love this book!
We got this book as a gift for our toddler and she absolutely loves it! The story has a simple and sweet message. It’s mostly pictures and a back and forth dialogue which is fun to read. We loved it so much that we ended up purchasing it as a gift for her cousin.

  • Heartfelt and hilarious
Highly recommended for kids and adults and anyone who could use a boost in their day. It’s okay and good to like yourself, and you deserve to be liked, yes, you. Thank you to the author for passing on the jacket.

  • Gentle, funny, and great discussion starter
I love how so much of the story is contained in the illustrations, where we first see a pigeon show empathy toward a down-and-out seagull, by offering its red jacket to the gull (complete with fries in the pockets). The jacket helps the gull transform its sense of self, before it's lost in a sudden wave. The gull panics, thinking it's lost forever. When its friends find and return it, the gull figures out that it has many friends (even without the jacket). So when it sees a despondent turtle, it knows it no longer needs that jacket, and offers it to the turtle. Thus starting the cycle of transformation all over again. Filled with lovely little twists of humor, this book would be terrific to inspire discussions about where that sense of self comes from. Does it come from the jacket? Or in how you see and carry yourself differently when "wearing a different coat"? Food for thought. ... show more

  • An exceptional story about friendship & inclusion that kids will ENJOY reading!
The Red Jacket introduces us to a seagull who seems a little dejected and lonely. He's looking pretty sad, amid the large flock. Things change for Bob when he gets a swanky red jacket, complete with fries in the pockets (YES!). Bob's life changes and we start to learn and think about how our clothing influences the way we behave or the way others see us. Complete with a whole bunch of fun speech bubbles for easy reading and bright and distinct illustrations, this book appeals to children and teaches great lessons about friendship. What do we need more, a red jacket, or great friends? It's a darling story that comes full circle in such a satisfying way. Read as a nomination in the Fiction Picture Book book award category as a panelist for Children's and Young Adult Bloggers' Literary Awards (Cybils Awards). Themes of friendship, sharing, kindness, inclusion, confidence. ... show more
