Description

The first major work of art history to focus on women artists and their engagement with the spirit world, by the author of The Mirror and the Palette. It's not so long ago that a woman's expressed interest in other realms would have ruined her reputation, or even killed her. And yet spiritualism, in various incarnations, has influenced numerous men—including lauded modernist artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich and Paul Klee—without repercussion. The fact that so many radical female artists of their generation—and earlier—also drank deeply from the same spiritual well has been sorely neglected for too long. In The Other Side, we explore the lives and work of a group of extraordinary women, from the twelfth-century mystic, composer, and artist Hildegard of Bingen to the nineteenth-century English spiritualist Georgiana Houghton, whose paintings swirl like a cosmic Jackson Pollock; the early twentieth-century Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint, who painted with the help of her spirit guides and whose recent exhibition at New York's Guggenheim broke all attendance records to the 'Desert Transcendentalist', Agnes Pelton, who painted her visions beneath the vast skies of California. We also learn about the Swiss healer, Emma Kunz, who used geometric drawings to treat her patients and the British surrealist and occultist, Ithell Colquhoun, whose estate of more than 5,000 works recently entered the Tate gallery collection. While the individual work of these artists is unique, the women loosely shared the same goal: to communicate with, and learn from, other dimensions. Weaving in and out of these myriad lives while sharing her own memories of otherworldly experiences, Jennifer Higgie discusses the solace of ritual, the gender exclusions of art history, the contemporary relevance of myth, the boom in alternative ways of understanding the world and the impact of spiritualism on feminism and contemporary art. A radical reappraisal of a marginalized group of artists, The Other Side is an intoxicating blend of memoir, biography, and art history. Read more

  • A Great Uncovering of “Spiritual” Female Artists
Really enjoyed a thorough look at these different artists over a wide ranging time period. Some I had known and others were new to me but so great to read about them in the context of each other. Well written and researched. Being a modern day “spiritual artist” I found a lot to relate to. I rarely read a book twice but I will reference this again and again and may reread it! ... show more

  • Inspiring for any artist - and especially women
This book opened my curiosity about women artists who were initially forgotten or ignored and how their relationship to spirit or spiritualism influenced their art. A very engaging read.

  • A must for all of us interested in impact of spiritual dimension on art, expcialy by women
Jennifer Higgie has come along and without knowing addressed an issue I musing about for seveal years. She writes with eruditon but ease of understanding about how women artists down through the ages have been steadily searching for all dimensions of life. Not just through art they (and others) produce but reaching out to study, read, live. Her previous book, THE MIRROR and The Portrait, I think an excellent adjunct to The Other Side. If you interested in women's history, the way women haved survived Please do yourelf a big favor and read both if these books by a very insightful writer and writer. ... show more

  • Insightful and Illuminating
I adore this book. The chronological presentation and deep-dive into artists compelled by spiritual influences helps me to better understand and articulate the art I am personally manifesting. Thank you for writing this -- I greatly enjoyed the read.

  • Not worth it
I was intrigued by the brief summary before purchasing this book, turned into a book meant to fuel my fire in my wood stove. Being spiritual person myself, I wanted a book about art and connection to spirituality… this book started off negative and embracing certain communities and ideas that come off negative. Being a woman myself this book is not worth the read and strays away from what it really means to be a woman and not by this whole “we don’t need a man” kind of writing. I couldn’t make it through the book it was an easy read but hard for me to continue. I prefer more uplifting books, I do not like the approach this author took and killed the idea of the art and spirituality connection. ... show more

  • Yes!
I’m enjoying this book. Each presentation of a new artist is presented like long article giving history, context, and descriptive details of the artwork itself and the artist’s process. It flows well from one artist to the next and how they overlap or intersect. This is my area of interest, and she’s writing about female artist that I already know and love, and presenting new to me artists. What a find! Jennifer Higgie, Thank you for writing this book. ... show more
