Description

FOURTH EDITION. Originally published in February 2022 and updated in June 2024. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail Through-Paddler's Companion is the first (and only) comprehensive resource guiding paddlers from the first put-in to the last take-out on the 700-mile plus water trail. This fully updated guide is a must-have resource for aspiring Through-Paddlers or for any paddler looking for additional Northern Forest Canoe Trail details. The revised fourth edition includes better advice about remaining on more of the Trail's upstream segments, suggestions for paddling the least challenging section of the S. Branch Dead River, more accurate mileage data and added (or removed) campsites. Recognized as the preeminent water trail by the American Canoe Association, the 740 mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) begins in the Adirondacks at its western terminus in Old Forge, New York, ending at the eastern terminus in Fort Kent, Maine. It traverses 23 rivers and streams, 59 lakes and ponds, connects 45 communities and towns, and includes more than 65 portages, totaling about 70 miles. The Trail has been named "America's Best Canoe Trail" by Outside magazine and a "Best East Coast Adventure" by Canoe and Kayak. The Through-Paddler’s Companion documents navigating the Trail in its entirety—west to east from the perspective and unique needs of an expedition paddler or anyone looking for more detailed information while following the official NFCT maps. It provides comprehensive and tactical advice about specific water bodies, including upstream paddling directions, portage (or carry) descriptions and distances, and mileage markers, while offering suggestions for ordinary, yet sometimes elusive matters, such as where one might spend the night. The “Companion” guidebook includes: • 34 consecutive segment descriptions documenting the entire Trail including 160-plus miles of upstream paddling • 25 illustrated maps highlighting challenging trail sections • Details about every portage (or carry) with recommendations about how “wheelable” each may be • Statistics about average paddle times • Tips for planning daily mileage goals • Lists of services found along the Trail • A quick reference list of all the official NFCT portagesRead more

  • The NFCT Bible
As new and relatively obscure as the Northern Forest Canoe Trail is compared to the AT/PCT/etc., I was happy to find a top notch NFCT guide written specifically for thru paddlers that breaks the trail down piece by piece, portage by portage. Bottom line is don't even think about hopping onto the NFCT if you don't have this book in your backpack. I finished my self-propelled NFCT thru paddle on June 28th, 2017 (started May 23rd) and I consulted this book every day multiple times. As icing on the cake, not only does it help you get where you want to go, but it's also beautifully written. I had initially purchased the 2nd edition (before the 3rd edition was released) and only just realized that I didn't have the most updated version right before my thru paddle - I contacted the author and she quickly send me a PDF with the updated sections. ... show more

  • easy to return but still annoying
This description clearly says THIRD EDITION in all caps and the picture of the book cover also says it is the third edition, but i received the second edition... easy to return but still annoying. If you want the updated version don't buy this one.

  • Fantastic guidebook!
This book is incredibly detailed, yet somehow still enjoyable to read--Katina's writing style is great. This will be your Bible if you do the trail. Read it before each day of paddling!

  • or make good decisions while you are on the trail
Whether you are thinking of taking on this trail as a through-paddler or a section paddler, all I can say is, don't go without this book. My son and I paddled the trail in 2016 and came to refer to this book affectionately as 'the bible'. It is as essential as a paddle. We had the entire NFCT map set as well, but the maps do not offer any of the narrative necessary to be able to plan as you prepare, or make good decisions while you are on the trail. All that comes from this book. Happy paddling! ... show more

  • Companion Guidebook for the distance traveler
There are a number of questions which arise when planning a longer trip that do not apply to the day or weekend paddler. Questions about logistics, re-supply, river related obstacles, what gear really works and more. Katina, a successful thru-paddler of the 700+ mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail herself, shares this key information with the reader. As a relatively new trail, not many have completed the entire trail, so even with blogs and the support of the ever-helpful office staff in Waitsfield, VT there have been, until now, many unanswered questions. With the support and advice of many, Katina has been able to produce the first edition of the Through-Paddler's Companion. For those planning a longer trip, this book provides invaluable information. Thanks to all who helped, and especially to Katina for writing and producing it! Mark Fromm 2012 Thru-Paddler ... show more

  • Exactly What I Needed and More Than I'd Hoped For
I've been planning a NFCT through paddle for 4 years and will begin my trip in June. The NFCT produces a great guide and map set, but they are written in the assumption that all paddlers travel downstream. As through paddlers travel many miles upstream these directions are also confusing. This book breaks the route into segments that, with detailed descriptions, allowed me to really begin to unsolder stand my challenges and to estimate how much water I might cover each day. I could go on....just know that if you plan a through paddle that you must have a copy of this book. I feel so much more confident than I did with just the NFCT maps and guidebook. ... show more
