Did a lot of research before settling on this shoe for a sub-ultra trail race. It definitely had the chops to handle all of the terrain and more. It's not the shoe of a speed demon as it feels sluggish at faster paces, but it will help you on the long haul. Now my big toes did suffer from the front wing of the plastic plate, so I had to change shoes in the middle of my trail race. Bur since then I have trimmed down the offending piece of plastic with good results. I can still feel a bit of pressure and stiffness there but it's much better and hopefully won't cause another blister. The midsole foam is legendary - propulsive and supportive, while the rocker profile works wonderfully to keep the flow going on flatter terrain. The spring-toe takes some getting used to but seems to help for climbing and technical sections. (It keeps your toes slightly elevated in a semi-flexed position at rest.) I prefer a flatter toe instead for comfort and foot health, as well a slightly wider toe box, but this works well as a performance fit that's still fairly forgiving. Heel lock is excellent with the grippy laces and the ability to use a runner's knot. The proprietary outsole is an excellent balance of grip, efficiency, and (so far) durability. It does not grip as well on slippery surfaces as the Vibram equivalent but it is perfectly adequate for most cases. Overall I recommend this shoe, but if you want a wider fit check out the newer Altamesa 500 V2 instead as it's also excellent. ... show more

These are some of the most underrated shoes on the market. The midsole is perfectly spongy, but not so spongy that it fees unstable. They are amazing for the cost. I would consider them competitors to the Hoka Speedgoats.

I have 2 pairs of these shoes! They are ultra distance race approved. I raced a 50 miler in them and will use them for my 100 miler coming up. I love the rocker geometry with this shoe. Makes strides effortless. Makes you want to go long.
