Description

The official inside story on the making of the award-winning movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings: The Making of the Movie Trilogy is a lavishly illustrated, behind-the-scenes, definitive account of the creation of an epic film experience. Hailed by critics worldwide, part one of the movie trilogy was a box-office smash, one of the most successful films of the decade. Peter Jackson's "fierce, imaginative movie takes high-flying risks and inspires with its power and scale," wrote Newsweek. "In every way this is moviemaking on a grand scale," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle, while Time proclaimed the "grandeur, moral heft and emotional depth" of the film, which received thirteen Academy Award(R) nominations. Including more than 300 photographs from all three films, most unique to this book, and exclusive interviews with all the cast and crew, Brian Sibley's fascinating book takes every fan inside the process of adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's masterwork for the screen. For the first time in history, three major movies were made at the same time, a triumphant and monumental undertaking that took the world by storm. Here can be found details about the hundreds of dedicated artists, craftspeople and cast and crew members who labored for years -- adding authenticity at every stage -- to bring one of the greatest stories ever told to an eager film audience. Sibley takes us inside the process of filmmaking to show us how the magic is made -- from the director, writers and actors to wardrobe, makeup, miniatures, music and digital special effects, it's all here. "It was tiring, physically and mentally, but never dull. Three movies, one big story, and so much variety: one day shooting scenes of intimate heart-wrenching drama, the next, vast battle scenes involving hundreds of extras. Every day brought an opportunity to create something new on this enormous canvas that is The Lord of the Rings." -- Peter Jackson Read more

  • Perfectly Realized
I have read all of the other books Amazon has offered (so far) regarding Peter Jackson's career, Richard Taylor's Weta Workshop, and have all of The Hobbit design/weapons/props/costumes/scenery and NZ locations companion books Daniel Falconer has created for the Warner Bros Entertainment publishing company. The author of this book, "The Making of the Movie Trilogy (The Lord of the Rings)," Brian Sibley, is a familiar face from the many hours of bonus feature videos of expert interviews included in the home-video releases of the six Wingnut Film productions of The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. What Mr Sibley has done in his own book is essentially to boil down the information into highly concentrated chapters. That he has made it a personal story of his time in New Zealand prevents it from being a recitation of dry statistics, and by his good humor is willing to play himself up as the astonished gawker to prevent the surprises in the narrative from losing their dramatic capacity to surprise us all. At shy of 200 pages, it is still so dense - complete with terrific production and workshop color photographs - that I've found myself re-reading entire chapters rather than rush steadily to the end of the book. The illusion that it is a much longer book than each of those referred to above, is as magic-seeming as anything else the tale has to tell. I AM ENJOYING THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. ... show more

  • Good book on the making of all three movies
This is a fun book to read if you're a fan of the LOTR movies and/or a fan of "making of" books. It isn't, however, Sibley's best book (which I would say is the one he did about "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"). Part of the issue with this book is that he had to write about creating three mammoth movies in one book. So there's a lot of information in here--and lot's of good pictures--but I wish he had done three books, one about each movie. On the other hand, that would have been very hard because, as this book shows, they were filming all three at one time. I almost gave this book 3 stars, because of what I think it lacked, but it deserves the other star just because the movies were so good! If given the choice, I might have given it 3.65 stars. ... show more

  • Great book!
I definitely recommend this book for any LOTR fan! It is full of interesting behind the scenes information on how they made the movie. It was everything I expected it to be, and it even arrived a week before it said it would. Great book!

  • Enjoyed All the New Anecdotes
I was happily surprised with the number of new anecdotes about the making of The Lord of the Rings movies, things new to me despite me being a LOTR film junkie since the beginning and a Tolkien enthusiast for about 40 years. Sibley's writing style can be awkward at times, but that doesn't spoil it for me. ... show more

  • An awesome book for "Lord of the Rings" fans !
This book explains alot of things that I didn't know about the movies. How the intriquet the movie sets were, where the movies were filmed and alot of information about the actors and actresses. It also has some great pictures in it. I would recommend this book to anyone that loved the movies!

  • Moldy and covered in food (sauce)
I should have known better for the price, I just wasn't expecting the hardback cover to be covered in pizza sauce, or the adjacent dust jacket to be moldy (where the accursed sauce was touching it). Definitely not a great PRIME product for the price.
