  • Great game for the LotRs lover
My husband and I absolutely love this game. Couldn’t wait to play it! It can be hard to understand at first, but by the time we finished the first game we understood it and loved it! It is really great quality. We’ll be playing it a lot for sure!

  • Heavily roll based with some strategy
This game is extremely luck based. The cards you draw, the amount of spaces you move, and winning battles. are all based on luck. Which character you move can change how the battles go. If they are behind the ring bearer or have moved into the next area they don't help with battles which loses you chances to win. There are a couple cards that can help with battles and movements but getting them is based on your rolls and whether or not they were put on the field. Overall it was a decent game, played it a few times and how they go have enough variety to not get boring fast. ... show more

  • Husband loved it!
My husband is not a huge lover of board games like I am. I got this for him hoping the LOTR theme would sway him to play with me. It worked and he enjoyed the game! We have played twice and won once and lost once, good variety. Well made.

  • Fun cooperative game, challenging, good replayability
This is a solid co-op game. The rules are complex at first, but take time to watch the how-to playthrough video and it's pretty straightforward. It's challenging to play and you will probably lose a couple times before figuring out a good strategy to get the Hobbit to the end. Great replayability and a nice gift for the LOTR and tabletop lover, even for those who don't know much about LOTR. ... show more

  • Fun family game in the LOTR universe
While mostly luck driven, there is a bit of strategy involved which comes in *how* you move the "fellowship" and just *which* dice you select for possible activation on a turn. There's a bit of randomness as well as variability in the cards that make up the "Encounter" card row - you use 6 of 7 cards for each location of the journey. These cards can be one-time bonus helps or can cause bad things to happen. While the game is somewhat thematic it breaks from the books in that Frodo and Sam never leave the fellowship with everyone traveling together towards the goal. You overcome some of the luck involved by selecting 2 dice to roll out of 5 (each a different color) along with 2 more fixed dice (always include 2 black ones) and then selecting *which* 2 of the dice rolled (1 black and 1 color) are actually used. There are 2 phases rolling dice and the 1st is less random than the 2nd due to dice assignment. The biggest, and most annoying, "luck" factor is in battles. You roll a single die and a bad result can't be mitigated without having one of a few special cards allowing for modifying those rolls. You find yourself avoiding those battles at all costs. Components are decent with standees (meh) instead of plastic miniatures. Cards are acceptable quality considering how little they're handled. The "one ring" is just not good - a cardboard circle colored to look like a ring. It works but could have been much better and should have been metal - or at least plastic. While there aren't a lot of standees I can see where making them plastic could have significantly increased the cost and it's absolutely a family game with a lower entry cost. Considering the base color pairs with a die, if miniatures had been used they'd have to be colored or at least have a colored base to attach, also increasing cost. Artwork is nice and colorful. The instructions are well organized, and do a good job explaining how things work. What few questions I had playing a first round were easily located and had clear answers. Overall, it's a fun, light weight, family style coop game that makes a decent filler for those times you don't want a brain burn of a game. The description says 1-4 but there's nothing inherent in the game preventing more players. Any card(s) "activated" (earned) can be used by anyone and each player selects which 2 members of the fellowship they'll move on their turn. My true score for this one is a 7/10 due to its welcoming family nature, in spite of the luck involved. I've rounded it up to 8/10 (aka 4 stars) due to the well done manual, attractive board, and colorful and attractive art on the cards. ... show more

  • Fun game for Lord of the Ring fans
Grabbed this because our whole family loves Lord of the Rings. Watched a walkthrough video online and it was really easy to pick up how to play from just that. Only had to peek at the rules a couple times to clarify things we missed. The rules are very straightforward. There wasn't any open ends (that always bugs me in new games). There is a ton of luck involved and a little bit of strategy. I love that this is a co-op game. When you don't want things to devolve into bickering with your younger players, co-op is the way to go! All that said, it is a challenge to beat. We were very lucky and made it to the very final spot (even got to skip most of the climb up the mountain with our nice rolls and helper card). But we still lost because of one bad roll. We'll play again I'm sure, after we recover from the loss! ... show more

  • Definitely for children
I played this game solo and while I had fun at the time, I don't see myself playing it often. I got my butt handed to me on my first game, so it is not an easy game to win, but it is all luck driven. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: I did appreciate it being fashioned after games from my Era, where you have tokens to move around the board and obstacles to deal with once you land. It is not a deck builder or a worker placement, or a resource management game.....getting tired of those. It's really simple to learn and start playing. The rulebook is clear. It takes between 30-60 minutes to play depending on how well your characters are doing. It is easy on the wallet. Cons: Because it is easy on the wallet, the components are cheap cardboard standees. The cards are very thin and were already curled a bit, right out of the box. Plastic standees would have made the game more thematic. There is a little too much luck involved. Since it is die-driven, you are at the mercy of the die roll. The game felt incomplete, with not much to do or many options for assistance when you found yourself in a bind. Overall, it is not a bad game and I think younger kids will enjoy the simplicity of game play. It definitely presents a challenge but I am not certain there is enough to keep today's style of gamer interested. If I could trade it for a game with a little more substance, I would. If you are looking for a game to play with the whole family that isn't too complicated or competitive, then this might be a game for you. ... show more
