  • Once More With Feeling
By my count, there have been four Annihilation events in the Marvel Universe. The first is the most well known and involves an invasion of the Marvel Universe by the Negative Zone conqueror, Annihilus (hence, the name of the whole event). The first Annihilation is galactic in scale, drawing pretty much every space civilization into its orbit (except the Shi'ar). It leads into a solo Nova book which is excellent. The second is Annihilation Conquest. The scale is still massive but limited to all of Kree space instead of ALL space. This one DOESN'T involve Annihilus but the name is too good to NOT call it Annihilation. Conquest is all about the Phalanx assimilating the Kree and anyone else unlucky enough to get trapped within the Kree Empire. It leads to founding of the present day Guardians of the Galaxy. Also excellent. The third Annihilation is Annihilation Scourge and came out years after to first two events (in 2019). I'll be honest: I saw this book on the shelves for the first time two months ago and didn't know it existed before that. I only recently picked it up and haven't read it yet. I hear it isn't very good but it DOES have Annihilus in it. And that brings us to The Last Annihilation. While the original event and Conquest are massive events, with spin-off mini-series and a multi-issue mega-book to cap things off, The Last Annihilation is smaller in publishing scale being mostly a final storyline to the most recent Guardians of the Galaxy series, an issue of the X-Men comic, SWORD, and three one-shots. In universe, it is galaxy spanning while being tightly focused on key galactic centers in Shi'ar space, Kree/Skrull space, Chitauri space, and Spartoi space. The stakes are the entire universe. The adversary is the Dark Dimension's Dormammu. There's no Annihilus but, as with previous Annihilation comics, that isn't compulsary. So, how is the actual event? It's not bad. It doesn't have the same feel as Annihilation or Conquest. The stakes may be high, but nothing ever feels desperate. Our heroes never seem like they're going to lose. In fact, the one-shot tie-ins each feature some group or another winning a major conflict. So it's more a matter of: Here's our threat and here is us assembling our means to ultimately win. It's a satisfying conclusion with a couple twists and revelations at the end but mostly acts as the final adventure of the current Guardians of the Galaxy line-up. What I really love about it, though, is seeing how the Marvel Universe has embraced those cosmic comics. Guardians of the Galaxy might not sell super well (I'm assuming because it keeps getting relaunched) but it's a big deal title. SWORD also might not have sold well (I also assume because it only got to two trades) but it is a stellar title that probably spent too much time in crossover events and not enough time doing it's own thing. The one-shots give us Cable (the older version recently returned to life), Galactic Wakanda (I... I have missed some things), and a tale of former Young Avengers and current royal couple of the Kree/Skrull Empire, Hulkling and Wiccan. All well told stories that help flesh out the event. Man, the Kree and Skrulls! They are in a much better place now than when the first Annihilation started but they continue to get blasted while in the midst of rebuilding. The Kree have gone through a hell of a lot of leadership changes in that time. Here's hoping the current royal couple sticks around. The main chapters of this story are written by Al Ewing. They are well crafted, featuring the Guardians and SWORD casts. The Guardians get the most play here considering most of the event takes place in their book but Agent Brand and Manifold get used in a lot of the books. Doctor Doom also gets involved. Again, everything is well crafted and the story beats work well. Speaking of well crafted, that art is really good. My highlight is Stefano Caselli on SWORD. I remember seeing his art WAY back on Young Avengers/ Runaways during Civil War and being sold. Always a highlight wherever I see him working. Juan Frigeri is also doing great work as the Guardians of the Galaxy artist. The word of the day is: well crafted. Frigeri is doing good work with easy to follow storytelling. It's good looking but isn't particularly dynamic. I like to think of this as Modern Marvel's house style because I see a lot of art at this level of quality on many titles. That is NOT an insult. A lot of nineties book would kill to look this good. Hell, MOST of them would. This is just the level Marvel should be running now. I only think of it as a house style because it isn't daring. It does it's job and looks great, pairs well with the colors, but I'm not left remembering any stand out scenes. What I love about it is that I don't get confused over who this character or that character is in any of the chapters. Everyone looks distinct. Rich Rider with his helmet off doesn't look like Star-Lord, for example. Sometimes, you get lost in the details and cast members start blending into each other. Not so in this book. Also: NOVA! I hadn't realized that Rider was in the Guardians book. Now, I've gotta go seek out those trades... All in all, this was a good story. It didn't feel like it sold the danger very well but it was well crafted and looked great. Is it worthy of being The Last Annihilation? No, not really. I guess I expect an Annihilation event to be BIGGER, by a publishing standpoint. I'm talking at least two oversized trades worth of material. Mini-series. Alpha issues. Obscure characters showing up half-way through. But this is a fine cosmic story with an oversized cast of characters that doesn't cost you the price of two oversized trades so I'm good. ... show more

  • It was..... just ok
Maybe I'm too old school but being a diehard reader for over 40 years, I can say with all honestly, the story doesnt live up to the title it snatches from. But maybe that's ok. Annihilation was a hard story to compete with. But the ending to this seemed rushed and lack luster
