Personal finance has always been a vital topic to me, and I enjoy reading books that deepen my understanding. Naturally, Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor has been on my radar for some time. What’s crazy is how perfectly the timing worked out. I had been thinking about getting the book when I stumbled upon an episode of the TIP Podcast featuring the commentator of this 75th-anniversary edition. Hearing about the new release made me even more excited to finally pick it up. I’m so glad I did! The book itself is of excellent quality—well-made, with a great price point for such a valuable resource. The commentary included in this edition is incredibly helpful, offering modern insights and breaking down Graham’s ideas in a way that’s easier to understand for today’s investors. If you’re serious about investing or just starting to take personal finance seriously, this book is an absolute must. My new years resolution for 2025 was to pick an undervalued stock and make money off of it. I didn't have the faintest clue as to where to begin or how to go about doing it. In my years of life experience in order to be the best, you have to study the best. Warren Buffett was the first person that came to mind. I also noticed there is no shortage of books on stock picking. How does anyone choose? After a further investigation I noticed "The Intelligent Investor" really stuck out. I also noticed Buffett wrote the preface so I decided to give it a go. When I told my friends this is the book I've decided to buy most of them told me it was out of date. My thought about that was if it was so out of date, then why is it still in print? So I didn't accept that excuse not to get it. I took this book very seriously. I even took notes on nearly all 600+ pages! The first five chapters I found to be VERY interesting. I couldn't stop reading. However I had to take one star off because Benjamin Graham can be a bit wordy and to make matters worse, he backed up his reasoning with examples and facts. For a guy like me I will take everything he says at face value because the man is legendary. I can imagine at the time this book was published (some three years before his death) he probably felt like he needed to prove himself. I'll give Jason Zweig, who not only updated this book with extensive commentary but also plentiful footnotes, five stars. The language he used was less wordy. I must confess I never heard of Mr. Zweig before I bought this book. My interest in him has so peaked that I'm thinking about buying another book from him. And now for me to report on my results: finally, at the beginning of August, I decided to buy stocks using the procedures recommended by the old, outdated policies of Mr. Graham. We are currently at the tail end of September and I must admit all but one stock is up. Several returned more than 10 per cent. It gets dense but when you put the finished book down you feel like you know more than the average stock buyer about how to find good value and invest with real principle rather hang on to the emotions of market uncertainty and the high and lows of volatility.
