Description

A modern fable with an urgent message for young environmentalists. "Spectacular." (School Library Journal)Lynne Cherry journeyed deep into the rain forests of Brazil to write and illustrate this gorgeous picture book about a man who exhausts himself trying to chop down a giant kapok tree. While he sleeps, the forest’s residents, including a child from the Yanomamo tribe, whisper in his ear about the importance of trees and how "all living things depend on one another" . . . and it works.Cherry’s lovingly rendered colored pencil and watercolor drawings of all the "wondrous and rare animals" evoke the lush rain forests. Features stunning world maps bordered by detailed illustrations of fascinating rainforest creatures. An IRA Teacher’s Choice ABA Pick of the Lists Reading Rainbow Review Book NSTA-CBC Outstanding Trade Book for Children Read more

  • A classic!!
Format: Paperback
What's not to love. This book has been around forever and is still timely. Beautifully illustrated and full of rich vocabulary that is a teacher's dream this book is a perfect intro into topics of all sorts: Rainforests, Green Living, Conservation, and how all living things are linked together. I used this book when I taught school 15 years ago and just bought another copy to read to my own children before a trip to the amazon rainforest in Peru. LOVE this book. ... show more

  • Perfectly timed and appropriate !!!
Format: Paperback
My 3-6 yr old students were engaged in the text and able to feel empathy for the characters. A good read for your rainforest unit or conservation/earth day curriculum. Important message all year long! Think before acting- the impact of choices with the environment are deeper than they appear.

  • Educational Rainforest Reading
Format: Paperback
This book did a wonderful job of showing how the animals of the rainforest depend on each other and the resources of the rainforest to live. I love how the book left you thinking about the man in the story and his decision not to cut down the tree. I used this in my classroom as a resource to show how/why the rainforest is endangered. The pictures in this book are great and really helped my students visualize what the rainforest looks like. I would recommend this book to any elementary classroom working on food chains, endanagered animals, or saving our environment. ... show more
