Description

More than 300 random tables designed to help you build a new world from scratch or take your existing RPG campaign to new levels of creativity and excitement, plus 3 exciting one-shot adventures! While The Game Master's Book of Astonishing Random Tables is not a wondrous item, you'd be forgiven for assuming it has magical properties. That's because within these pages are countless adventure hooks - side quests and travel complications and chase sequences and skill challenges and other encounters suitable for any environment. And that's just one section. These table results aren't just short line listings of random answers either. Inside, you'll find rich, fully examined results and supplemental pieces of text that provide you with all the information you need to use them effectively. With this book by your side, you can develop an entire campaign setting, its pantheon, its various continental forms and proclivities of its population. From the big questions ("Where does magic come from?," "Who's in charge?," "Why are we at war with our neighbors?") down to the most minute detail ("Can my party avoid paying property taxes on their new keep if it's actually an instant fortress?"), this book has you covered. Develop a rich tapestry of trade and commerce by randomizing your realms economy or find out who's really pulling the strings by rolling on the Puppet Government table. Want more ideas? How about a table or curses or dreams or wild magic results or spell scroll side effects or a random potions generator or a list of things your party shouldn't tough (but probably will)? All those and much, much more are waiting within. So relax, unwind and unleash the unknown. By letting this book spark your creativity and set the stage for each session, you can focus on the important things like how to properly destroy that instant fortress). Read more

  • Still Punching Above It's Class
This is the 5th book so far in the Game Master's line. I've purchased the previous 4 (Encounters, NPC's, Traps, Dragons) and look forward to the next two in October (Proactive, Villains). The quality of the book itself is excellent. This is really top tier book materials and binding, especially considering the price. Full retail is a bargain, so if you get it at a discount, just more gravy on the chicken. Content wise, you get quite a bit. Pretty much anything your players will come across (but not everything, we know how "creative" they can be) is at hand for you to use. Random roll or a good idea from the list, use it however you need to. There's alot of flavor here for your homebrew world or to use in a pre-fab adventure for those times your party does something unexpected. Keep the core set of 4 at hand during sessions (Dragons can stay on the shelf till you need it) and you're pretty much covered when your party surprises you, or you want to surprise them. It would be nice to have an electronic version of these. A well made, indexed and searchable Kindle version or PDF with extensive links...or make them available on D&D Beyond as Digital Assets. Many of us love our physical books and also have digital versions on D&D Beyond to use when traveling light to a friend's table, conventions, game store, or a Discord/Zoom/VTT session. ... show more

  • Great Product!
This book is great! It is jam packed with all sorts of nifty stuff. Inside are many things to add some flavor to your game. For example; you are trapped in a horrible room by the high demon of the 5th floor. The clock of doom ticks. You must find the password to open the door. In the center of the room, an ornate tome rests upon an alter. The answer must be in it. .... You open it. It is a signed copy of Dr. Fluffytail's guide to cooking asparagus. tick tock, tick tock, tick tock Whether you are a seasoned veteran DM, or a first timer DM, you should get this book. ... show more

  • Very Disappointed and Underwhelmed
Not sure what it is with all the marketing quotes. I guess there's some back-scratching going on in the industry! But this book can be summed up as not terrible but not completely amazing either. Here's my list of critiques: - The god/pantheon section is horrible. That should have been omitted and not placed at the beginning of the book. It seems like no real research was done for this and the tables are way too small and too few. Something like this really needs a procedure for pantheon generation and not just a minimal set of one-off random god tables. - Most of the worldbuilding section isn't very good in my opinion. Only some of the city stuff like taverns, guilds, and organizations seems worthwhile to me. - Too many tables seem way too small for their purpose and too uniform in probability distribution. I kept running into 1d4 tables which is too small for just about anything. Some other tables are larger, like d10, but are uniform or too close to uniform in probability distribution terms. Often, d100 would make more sense, even with just a few options, only so the probabilities could be tweaked better. - The basic random encounters by terrain section is something that has been done to death and doesn't seem like anything new or innovative. That should have been left out. Only some of the things like hazards and skill challenges, or details about specific types of encounters, seem worthwhile. - The Magic and Misc section is the best section in the book. The whole book should have been this kind of thing if you ask me, along with better worldbuilding based on better research. The map-building type stuff should have been left out unless it's cities or very local. For maps, Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator has that covered, and people don't need "roll to see how many continents". - This publisher always includes these mini-adventures which I always wish were replaced with more of the stuff the book is about. I don't buy these kinds of books for mini-modules so they seem like wasted pages. Overall I'm much happier with The Game Master's Book of Random Encounters and The Game Master's Book of Traps, Puzzles and Dungeons. Those I have few criticisms of except that I don't want the mini-adventures. For the "random tables" stuff, I think I will have to stick to PDFs people have written that are more specific to particular areas of focus. ... show more

  • Incredibly Helpful
A DM guide for sure. This book can answer just about any variable your players can throw at you. I love the tables, and I love the variety of answers. So many situations and/or effects to help with your TTRPG. Make it easy, leave it to a roll. LOVE THIS BOOK.

  • Must Have for homebrew campaigns
I am running an open world homebrew campaign, and alot of un-expected things can happen in a session. The easiest way to roll with them is to have a random table handy. Need a surprise encounter? Random Table. Need a random NPC? Random Table. Need a magic item that the party found in a chest? Random Table. This book is amazing and gives you a great start on random tables and makes it easier to make up your own. ... show more

  • The Game Master’s Book of Necessity
I’ve been a d&d player for a few years now. Something I notice my DM and myself will struggle with in our worlds is deciding some of the finer details or spur of the moment qualities. This entire book has you covered. From world building details like what it looks like based on region style, to cuisine, and building style to spur of the moment tables like potions and elixirs, spells by level, and many more. I can’t wait to utilize this book to help develop my world more. Great size book and a great price as well! ... show more
