  • May be the only farm book you need
This may be the only farm book you need to teach your kids about the farm. Now if you your kid is super into farms, you may need a more in depth book, but for your average kid getting first exposure to farms, this is basically perfect. Not to mention the illustrations are absolutely beautiful.

  • It worked well as intended for use in an elementary school aged children's program.
This was a book purchased for use during summer elementary school aged children's classes. I book marked sections that went along with each specific days tour. It's definitely not a sit down and read the entire book at once type of book. Reading this book in sections was necessary to keep the children from feeling overwhelmed by the quantity of information. ... show more

  • 8 YO Son Loves It
This book is an excellent resource for our farming-obsessed 8 year old. The illustrations are beautiful, the farming insights are educational, yet very accessible for young readers. This is a book I know we'll return to for years. We're very happy with the purchase.

  • Jam-packed with interesting information and colorful illustrations about life on an organic farm
"The Farm That Feeds Us: A year in the life of an organic farm"... Wow, this book is really jam-packed with tons of information about various types of organic farms. It's obvious that the author put a lot of time and energy into this book, and is very familiar with the subject matter. There is information on a variety of things: different breeds of pigs and chickens, different types of crops, farm equipment, organic vs. non-organic, the farmer's market, to name just a few. There's even a bread recipe included. There really is a lot of information in this book. It might almost be overwhelming for a young child. I don't think this is a book that most children will be able to sit through in one reading. A lot of the concepts might be beyond a young child's understanding, and I can imagine that some children will lose interest when having this book read to them. I might try taking it just a couple of pages at a time, and really give the child a chance to look at the illustrations and ask questions, because the illustrations are great and include a lot of detail. An older child who may have some interest in farming could probably get some useful information from this book, but since it's in a picture-book format they may not feel comfortable reading it. This book may not be the perfect bedtime storybook for young children, but over time they should get some useful information from it. If nothing else, the pictures may ignite their imagination and inspire them to ask questions. It's obvious to me that a lot of effort went into the making of this book. I recommend it. ... show more

  • Limited appeal
The Farm That Feeds Us: A year in the life of an organic farm is an 80-page nonfiction picture book. I feel that it has the most appeal to a narrow age group, probably first and second graders. The Farm That Feeds Us is too dense to appeal to younger children, but older children probably feel like they are beyond children's books. Broken into sections by the four seasons, The Farm That Feeds Us covers various farming activities in no particular order other than the seasonal theme. Each spread covers one topic and then moves to the next. This is not a sun-up to sun-down description of activities, but covers everything from crop growing to animal husbandry to jam making. Every once in awhile there is some shorter, more poetic text to break up the larger informative paragraphs. Perhaps this text could be used by parents to make a shorter version for younger kids. I will admit, even I learned a few things from this book. There are things to appreciate. The Farm That Feeds Us is very informative. It also has a focus on ethical consumerism and the advantages of patronizing smaller farms. It might also get kids interested in trying some new fruits and vegetables after they read about them. The art doesn't do much for me, but I think it has kid appeal and it is easy to tell what is happening on each page. I do like that a variety of people are shown throughout the book. I think The Farm That Feeds Us has noble goals, but I wouldn't expect most kids to be all that interested. ... show more

  • Excellent Book For Teaching Kids About Farming
I love this book. It's enjoyable for kids but also enjoyable for adults who read to children. This is a book that you could start reading to a preschooler and continue on well into grade school age. Topics of farmings, crops, animals, procedures, equipment, seasons etc are discussed, with enough general information to provide lots of room for discussion. I love the illustrations and the way the book was laid out and flowed. Things of a sensitive nature like meat farming were sort of vague which makes it easier to read to young children. I think how parents want to discuss that with children is best left up to them, so I was sort of glad that it was not covered in the book. I feel like this is one of my favorite children's books that I have encountered in awhile. I would recommend this book to families with young children and admit that even I learned a thing or two that I did not know. Thanks for reading my review Becky Brooks ... show more
