  • "The Crow" on 4K - A must-own disc for fans and physical media collectors!
It's utterly insane to think that "The Crow," one of the definitive movies of the 90s, is thirty years old this year. I remember being a child when it came out and hearing all about it, and eventually stumbling onto it and becoming a fan when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. It's one of those films that really needs to introduction. The late Brandon Lee stars as Eric Draven, a rock musician who was murdered along with his wife-to-be Shelly one year ago. When a mystical crow brings Eric back to life and imbues him with superhuman abilities, he sets off on an odyssey of revenge and redemption, seeking to put the wrong things right bring justice to the men responsible for his murder... Directed by Alex Proyas, the film largely succeeds thanks to the remarkable performances and exquisitely stylized presentation. The movie's visuals are a celebration of grunge and goth, and its hauntingly mournful tone sets a beautiful mood. And there isn't enough that can be said for Lee, who I firmly believe would have become a superstar had he not tragically been killed during production. Special props also go to the excellent Ernie Hudson, a criminally underrated Michael Wincott and the excellent child-actress Rochelle Davis. I sat down and watched this wonderful new 4K release earlier tonight, and I have to say... if you're a fan or a physical media collector with a 4K set-up, this is absolutely a must-have disc! The 4K presentation is excellent all around, and this is easily the best I've seen the film look on a home-video release-- and that's saying a lot, because I felt the 2011 Blu-Ray was quite good. Picture quality here is near crystal-clear, with subtle increases in detail from start to finish. Things like the textures of the wardrobe are more noticeable, and many of the sweeping shots of the city (accomplished with miniature photography) look significantly sharper. The film also maintains a nice level of grain throughout the runtime, with no noticeable noise reduction... and thank god, because the graininess adds a lot to the presentation. Additionally, I adored the color of this release. The film is already quite dark visually, and I was worried since 4K discs can sometimes play up black levels too much. But this 4K wisely pumps the breaks and only lightly tweaks things like the contrast and black levels, creating a very nice balance. This is what I'd call a pretty ideal 4K remaster and release... it gives us the film we love as we remember it, but just a little better all around. I haven't been able to check out the new bonus features yet, though from what I understand there is roughly 40 minutes of new content, in addition to what was included in previous releases. So far as I can tell, everything that was on the previous DVD and Blu-Rays is here. All in all, I give this release the highest of recommendations. This is one of those discs that I firmly think everyone should have in their collection. It's a great film given an excellent presentation. 5 out of 5. ... show more

  • Solid 4K upgrade of this cult classic.
The Crow is a bit cheesy but it does almost everything right for a comic book film. It's super dark when needed, and it has an atmosphere that few films possess. It also doesn't totally take its grim exterior to heart. There are a few sequences where you will laugh, and overall it's very close to the comics in this regard. The 4K upgrade is absolutely stunning with a good layer of grain and exceptional detail. It's one of those films you appreciate even more on a large OLED with the black levels putting anything prior to shame. It's a beauty, and the slipcover is gorgeous. An easy recommendation here. I do wish some of the sound elements had maybe been remastered for the release, but altogether this is one you can safely crank up loud. ... show more

  • The hdr used in this 4k version maes a huge difference
The enhanced detail and use of HDR makes a huge difference. This version is well worth the cost if you have the equipment to pull out these enhancements. You will notice things you have missed going on in the shadows and much more. Enjoy, we have.

  • 4K. Plain plastic case.
Picture is generally better than the Blu-Ray. The opening building shots with the fires still look bad, but they do show more detail... see pictures (4K scaled to same size). The healing scenes still look really bad in 4K as they did on Blu-Ray, best viewed on VHS or DVD. Color saturation in the 4K is better. Grain is better in the 4K. HDR is another hit and miss. I'm so used to seeing certain films one way, that it's very striking in the way it looks with HDR. This is one of those films... probably because of its and my age. I don't have that problem with newer films. Audio is fine. I didn't notice any difference. It should have come with a Blu-Ray, given the price. ... show more

  • Collector item
The Crow is still an iconic and memorable movie in our home. When my son saw this he was excited to collect it and it was worth the price.

  • Could watch over an over again!
I love the original Brandon Lee version of this movie, the rest of the series are okay (wuth some better than others), but the first with Brandon Lee will always be my favorite. Highly Recommended.

  • Delivered?
After so many of my preorders got cancelled, I’m now shocked when I get a delivery. I’m happy this one did since this is one of my favorites. The steelbook design could be better and they could have added a regular blu-ray. Still no real tribute to Lee, which I don’t understand. I also wish it had a feature length documentary, the extras don’t seem complete. It does have nice picture and sound. I’m still going to hold onto my dvd and Blu-ray versions though. ... show more

  • Magnificent 4K Transfer
Absolute classic of a film and one of my all time favorites just got upgraded with an amazing 4K release to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original release. The scan is excellent and the movie has never looked better and still holds up after all this time. The disc comes with some extras that I haven’t seen before which were awesome to see a little more of Brandon Lee, taken too soon. This release should be in every fan’s collection and I will probably have to replace in a few years after wearing it out. I hope there’s an updated Blu-Ray too for those that are pixel challenged. ... show more
