    • The Coming Smasher of Wokeism? But are Things a Little too Perfect?
For me, it is going to be pretty hard not to like a guy who, early in his book, references Thomas Sowell's "The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy" and emphasizes his admiration for the judicial philosophy of Clarence Thomas. That tells me, right off the bat, that this is a guy who "gets it" and is "one of us." To almost clench it, later in the book, we further learn that he named his first child Madison and throughout the book, he cites "The Federalist Papers" numerous times. Despite being predisposed to like the guy, I found the book had its strengths and weaknesses. The Book's Strengths The book starts off a little slow, with DeSantis's early life not being the most riveting. Despite occasionally dipping into issues that are not the most rousing (e.g., algae in water runoffs in Florida), the book's pace and the importance of the issues definitely pick up as the book moves further along. One of DeSantis's greatest strengths in his run for President will, undoubtedly, be his competence and popularity as Florida's governor. Thus, he naturally spends most of the book discussing his governing record. There is a particular emphasis on how he handled the Covid pandemic. He focuses on several key themes in his Covid response, such as a skepticism of expert opinions; a commitment to evidence-based governance; and a conscious consideration of the tradeoffs of pandemic policies, with a specific emphasis on maintaining normal societal functions, especially regarding keeping children in school and allowing people to maintain their livelihoods. DeSantis clearly feels his Covid record is potentially his greatest strength and something he intends to make a central campaign theme. He uses the phrase "biomedical security state" numerous times in the book, so expect to hear that often on the campaign trail. Besides merely recounting his resume, DeSantis sheds ample light on how his decisions were based on his underlying governing philosophy, particularly what he sees as fundamentally wrong with the country. DeSantis sees "coastal elites" and the unaccountable "fourth branch of government" they have created at the core of it all. DeSantis proposes several ways he has and intends to continue dealing with it. Here he cites Madison and emphasizes the "power of the purse" in particular. The Book's Weaknesses The book had three main weaknesses that struck me: The first, perhaps not surprising given that he is a politician, is that he ignores certain problematic issues altogether. An example of this is his treatment of Trump and his followers. The book only praises Trump. There is no discussion of the problems associated with Trump, for example, January 6. The second major problem is not presenting the other side's position fairly: perhaps, a bridge too far for any politician. An example here is LGBTQ+ education in schools. There are cases both for and against. This is true whether you think one position is ultimately clearly better than the other. If you teach children about these things early, you risk confusing children who are not LGBTQ+ that maybe they are. On the other hand, if we do not educate them early, there is a risk that legitimately LGBTQ+ children will not feel as comfortable with themselves as they could or will receive less acceptance from their peers. The third major weakness of the book is that everything about DeSantis's presentation seems a little too perfect. He sometimes gets a bit intellectual, but never too much. He conveys his love of baseball enough, hopefully, to convey that he is aligned with blue-collar values, at heart, despite having attended the Ivies. Generally, he does this without too much overtness, but sometimes he stumbles. For example, he mentions twice that he passed on making a great deal of money in law by serving his country in the Navy instead. It would be better for readers to get this on their own. Given that things are a little too perfect, one wonders if DeSantis has ever been through a failure or a crisis affecting him emotionally and how he responded. Here the closest he comes is recounting his wife's bout with breast cancer. Certainly, the emphasis should be on her, but here it would be acceptable to also say how it affected him emotionally and personally. Combined with only briefly displaying humor in the book, he comes across as a bit robotic. Conclusion In the book, DeSantis makes a strong case that he should be President if you agree that woke coastal elites, including the "biomedical security state," are ruining, or tried to ruin, the country. He emphasizes his record governing Florida and his handling of Covid. The book, however, sidesteps the question of Trump. It only praises him. The book does delve into DeSantis's governing philosophy. Here he has much in common with fellow presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Although DeSantis's book does present the legal strategies he intends to use to fight wokeism, I thought Ramaswamy presented much more detailed arguments in "Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam." Regarding the sway on prospective book readers: nothing is surprising here. Those conservatives who want an alternative to Trump will likely find a good one in DeSantis. This book will probably win over a fair number of moderates, both left and right. For Trumpists, there may be some sway due to DeSantis's handling of Covid, but, in general, there is no direct case against Trump. Indeed, some farther to the right than "moderate" might be alarmed that DeSantis, citing Hamilton (not Jefferson!), is determined to make the Federal government much stronger and use his powers as President to the maximum extent possible. True, that is in fighting wokeism, but... For left-leaning people, seeing anything that would win them over is hard. DeSantis is even more conservative than Trump and clearly intends to smash wokeism if elected. At best, they may think he is the less bad of two evils, but even that is unclear if DeSantis can more competently implement his plans than Trump. ... show more

    • A synopsis of his time as governor --- what he did and how
I was very impressed by how well Gov. DeSantis writes. It's an easy read with detail well explained and understandable. If he brings that degree of understanding of what the people really want to the presidential contest he'll be a formidable contender. Better, more effective government, thoughtful administration of policies and a high degree of intelligence. In essence --- Trump without the crazy or legal challenges. ... show more

    • To Better Understand the Governor's Philosophy
This book gives a great understanding of the philosophy behind Governor DeSantis's agenda. The book is a bit self-serving, but that's understandable since he takes "arrows" from every single media outlet, as well as from the former President. Someone has to tell his story, so it might as well be himself. The book tells the story of a man who came from humble beginnings, who loves and understands the constitutional founding of the American Republic. It's a story of a man who chose to serve his country in the Military rather than chase the fortunes so many of his Yale and Harvard Law peers chose to do. Governor DeSantis may be just the person to clean up the widespread corruption that runs so rampant in the upper echelons of our federal government. I believe he would make an excellent president, although as a Floridian, I would hate to lose him as governor. If I were to predict the type of president Governor DeSantis would be, I believe he would be a combination of Calvin Coolidge and Ronald Reagan. ... show more

    • A true energetic executive!
Political books come out by the dozens each month. Some are good and seeking to paint a picture of current events, and some are so out of step with reality or political philosophy they obscure how government works! Then there is this book! A wonderful first person perspective from a man in the executive chair of a state! Governor DeSantis tells his story of his time in that role and offers practical insight of how a state should be run. Most politicians are not like house of cards they are dummies more like the cast of veep. So when a intelligent and competent politician who understands executive/legislative leadership tells a story we ought to pay attention! A lot of people won’t give this book a fair shake for one reason or another. However that would be a mistake, when a competent leader who has done a great jobs speaks only fools would tune that out. Overall this book does a great job of showing who DeSantis is as a man, a husband, a public servant, and as a governor ! The time he has spent in florida is as good a job as a governor could ever hope to do! So good Luck governor Desantis in the primaries! You are the only one qualified for the job! ... show more

These types of books tend to be dry reading and you have to consider what the author is trying to convey and overlook the, look what I did parts. I found the book to be informative and got a good idea of what kind of man Ron DeSantis is. His idea’s are in line with the way I think and how I view our country’s problems. I will probably vote for him, but I think he, or anyone like him, will have one very hard challenge in trying to change the system. I sure hope that he will be up to the task if elected. I pray that he will be safe and not give in to the corruption that power tends to give politicians. I highly recommend this book! ... show more

This is a straightforward recollection of his life so far. DeSantis lays out how he became a successful governor with humility but conviction. I would be happy to see him lead the country one day.
