This is a brilliant book with great technical information and fabulous pictures. Most importantly for me though is getting good glaze recipes that have materials that are easily found or can be adapted to what I have. I have trialled many recipes in this book and have found good success. John Britt writes well and gives good firing information. Also most helpful is where he shows the same glaze used on different types of clay, this is a critical factor in the success of any glaze so a most important point that needs to be shown. If you are wanting to learn about glazing, then this book is a must for you. If you follow through each section and test as many of the glazes as possible, and follow the different firing methods, you will at the end have a comprehensive understanding of glazes and firing. ... show more

I love these recipes! John Britt is a great resource for pottery. His glaze recipes are always reliable and you know you're getting a quality, tried and true recipe. There's little to worry about when trying on of his glazes for the first time. Aside from the recipes in this book, Britt offers up a ton of knowledge on the subject of high fire ceramics. I recommend this book to every potter interested in high fire. It's simply one of my favorite books to have on hand in the studio. A stellar book that explains the properties of elements and oxides in glazes, the firing methods, heat work, and testing glazes by line blends. Glazes are categorized by color as well as sections on special effect, iron, and salt glazes. There are many, many recipes and options here along with brief discussions about the characteristics of various glazes (shinos, tenmokus, celadons, etcetera). There are many excellent quality photos of test tiles and some nice pieces as well. I believe it is the most informative book on high fire glazes in existence. I haven't read the entire book yet. I am a beginning pottery student and I am finding the book to be an excellent reference for learning more about different types of glazes. I am starting to understand more about how to create my own glazes using a basic glaze formula and altering it depending on what I want the glaze to do. The book has probably about a hundred (I could be a bit off) glaze recipes. I have tried several of them with success. I think the importance of this book is not the recipes but the discussions that go with them, that allow for understanding of how to create glazes. The book also discusses the fire cycle (just a little bit) in relation to different glazes. ... show more

Probably the best book I've ever read on ceramic glazes of any sort, and in fact one of the best technical books I've ever read. He has collected and gives the formulas for most of the major glaze-types in the cone 10 arena. You can use it directly for the recipes, or develop your own based on his collections of formulas. It is also an excellent general guide to glaze ingredients, formulation, and other aspects of glazes and glazing. I can't say enough good about it. If you are working at cone 10, this is an absolute must and worth its weight in gold. It's on the order of Leach's "The Potter's Book" Buy it. ... show more

You can stop looking - this is the best ^10 glaze book out there. I have been a potter for over thirty years and tested many glazes. This is the most organized and user friendly information around. It is arranged by color in a way that allows you to easily see the difference between similar recipes. Unless you want to start form scratch (which I have no desire to do)this is where to look. You may need to adjust a little, as "glazes don't travel well" because of differences in water, chemicals, clay body and firing but this is a good place to start. This is the best glaze book by far. I have a large number of other glaze books but none of them have the pictures and recipes together and ready to use as well as this book does. I have mixed up dozens of glazes from this book and they all have turned out as pictured. Every time I look at this book I see another glaze or glaze combination that I want to try. It will save you lots of time because you will know how a glaze is going to turn out and don't have to make up a bunch of line blend tests to get the color right. I hope he will put out a Raku Glaze book which will cover everything Raku in the same depth and scope. ... show more
