  • Excellent Introduction and Detail, BUT...
Format: Paperback
This book deserves the five star rating for taking me from "CNC zero to hero" in the course of one reading of this book. It is well written (a few typos and word usage errors aside) with a nice progression of introduction, overview, and then detail. This is not a step-by-step plan for building a particular CNC, but an outstanding guide to CNC principles. The author acknowledges that his book is really just a well-organized collection of information that is widely available on the internet. He does an outstanding job of this, projecting his subject matter expertise. BUT... Two things: 1) this book was published in 2009; time for a second edition! The principles are still perfectly accurate, but four years is a long time in a technology such as this. As the author acknowledges, this information is available on the internet. If he expects it to continue selling, time for an update. 2) many/most of the pictures are so grainy as to prevent much detailed examination. This is particularly true of pictures showing complete machines. Up close pictures of components are much better. This issue may be related to the matte paper upon which the book is printed. But, I expect higher quality from a $25 book. All that being said, I will purchase the next edition of this book (should it be published). ... show more

  • A good place to start.
Format: Paperback
Having some Cad and electronics/ electrical background I am interested in CNC. What I didn't understand was the entire series of steps necessary to get from initial concept to working machine. This book covers the broad strokes and gets into some detail that is useful for a DIY type hobbyist or someone who is just interested in the field. It will take you to a point where you can think about what applications you'd like to use a machine for and give you the background to dig in to it with more confidence and sense of direction for a project. It's not a step by step guide to any one machine. It is a basic overview so that you can learn more from an informed viewpoint. It was informative and interesting enough to be a fun read. It did not come off as a dry textbook as I was expecting. Nice book. ... show more

  • Good book if you aren't sure where to start.
Format: Paperback
If you are new to the DIY CNC machine and interested, but don't know where to start - this is a great book for you. It will help you understand some of the vocabulary and gives a good introduction to each major area you will have to consider when building your own machine. The intent of this book is to provide an overview and is not the book for you if you want an in depth set of plans or schematics. ... show more

Format: Paperback
While there is some good information, it is rather generalized and mostly consists of a more shallow over view than I was expecting given the title.

  • Excellent place to start for learning about CNC
Format: Paperback
Having been an electronic technician for over 30 years most of it in a high speed manufacturing plant, you would think I pretty much know all there is to know about machines, but I learned quite a bit from this as it rounded out my education and filled in the holes I had for CNC. Great place to start, covered most all CNC topics in a general way which is good for an introductory book. If things were expounded upon it would be thicker and more expensive. This was a good balance for a first book on CNC. Highly recommend it and kudos to the author for a well edited book. Didn't find any mistakes. ... show more

  • Everything in this book is better explained on YouTube, and in Google search results. Waste of money.
Format: Paperback
Gripe-o-meter = 100%. This book is definitely obsolete because it's all out there waiting for you on YouTube and Google. For free. On top of that, I purchased a piece of s______ (software) called MeshCAM, because it was highlighted in this "beginners guide" book. MeshCAM was a complete waste of $600, and anyone else that buys MeshCAM will also waste $600. Dear author- next time why don't you actually use a 3rd party product, excuse me... prototype... before you parade it for your readers. ... show more

Format: Paperback
This book does a nice job explaining all the components of a basic CNC machine. Everything that was a mystery to me earlier has now been cleared up. However, this book does not provide the precise details in order to build a CNC. Other sources will have to be consulted for build information, yet with the knowledge gleamed from this book, the task should be easier. ... show more

  • Informative Overview of DIY CNC
Format: Paperback
Great overview for the DIY CNC projects. Lots of good practical information that will make the process easier. It's also well written for a technical book which is a bonus. The book is an overview and not really a 'cookbook' more like 'DIY CNC in a Nutshell' , but that's a minor quibble.
