Description

The Bikeriders captures a rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals, led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club. • Gripping, gritty and raw with stellar performances
Gripping, gritty and raw with stellar performances in a film that only Jeff Nichols could bring to vivid cinematic life. It’s been a while since a movie has taken me on this type of ride, transported to a specific time, place, and most importantly, feeling. Gorgeous cinematography and perfect needle drops keep you watching and listening throughout and, thankfully, no CGI or reliance on overwrought sequel/prequel or Marvel fare. It’s the rare film that can break through the box office “blockbuster” quest and provide an experience that asks you to turn your phone off, pay attention, and experience something original and authentic. If that appeals to you, you’re in for a treat. Tom Hardy brilliantly brings just the right amount of Brando gravitas to Johnny and creates an authentic and somewhat tragic character. And you just can’t take your eyes off of Austin Butler’s Benny. You instantly understand why Kathy hopped on the back of his Harley and never wanted to get off. But it’s not just his beauty. No one has ever said more without saying anything. A skill most actors rarely achieve. A supernova has been launched and I can’t wait to see what he does next. To tie it all together, Jodie Comer gives a tour de force performance as Kathy, Benny’s wife and de facto story narrator. She goes toe to toe with Hardy and blows it away. Riveting to watch. The supporting cast is also excellent. This is an adult movie with some tough scenes and themes. But there’s also humor and humanity on full display. My advice, drop the kiddos off at Inside Out 2 or Despicable Me 4 and treat yourself to this feast of a film. ... show more

  • Good with some issues
Overall, I liked this flick. I wish they had applied the documentary format to say the film adaptation of World War Z which was how the source material was written. Throughout the film I kept reminiscing back to Hunter S. Thompson’s book Hell’s Angels many times in which he documented that gang back in the 60s. I even had some déjà vu from Sandy Harbutt’s 1974 Aussie biker film Stone. Even though Austin Butler and Jodie Comer are supposed to be the stars, Tom Hardy walks off with the movie. He definitely is channeling Marlon Brando here, specifically The Wild One as shown early on in the film, and a bit of The Godfather. Some great small memorable roles from Norman Reedus and Michael Shannon. My main beef with the film from the beginning is that it is TOO Goodfellas or Goodfellas on bikes. The whole time Jodie Comer is narrating the story to the journalist, I can’t shake Lorraine Bracco as Karen in that movie. I know I started off this review praising the documentary format but you couple that with the Kathy character here and you can’t erase the comparison. My other issue is that there really isn’t really much of a plot in terms of Act 1-5 here. The ending and aftermath is pretty implausible. I did appreciate the friendship between Hardy and Butler’s characters. They rode bikes, they had a club, things changed, went bad, fell apart, and end of story. Much like anything else in real life I guess. You start off with people who are passionate about an art but then fanaticism and greed creeps in. ... show more
