  • Simple, useful, and fun to read - Excellent choice for first-time parents-to-be.
Format: Paperback
I love this book. This answers essentially all of the questions I had about becoming a father. It addresses things like how to prepare/organize your nursery, how to pick up your baby (with diagrams!), how and when to start feeding your baby. All of these things are probably common sense to people who are already parents, but if you're expecting your first, this will answer questions you may never have thought to ask. What's more, the book is written in a simple, humorous, easy-to-read way that makes its advice clear - it's hard to put down! I chose this book because it was written in part by a pediatrician, which means I feel most of the advice is coming from an evidence-based toolset. My wife is a pediatrician as well, and enjoyed (more importantly, agreed with) most of the book herself. There are a couple mild spots which are no longer up to date with American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations (I recommend you peruse their manual as well, though it's much longer and not nearly as fun), as there have been updates in the evidence since this book's last edition, but that shouldn't deter you - this book is all about the basics. ... show more

  • Highly Recommend. great advice in a clearly written and cute book
Format: Paperback
Fantastic for new dads (new moms and grandparents too). It’s a great, easy to read organized and well written book. I’m a first time grandma and I ordered it for my son- in-la and now I’m ordering one for my hubby and me as a “refresher course!” We are in our early 70’s and it’s been awhile and things have changed! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! ... show more

  • Very useful modern tips and reference guide for parents of new babies
Format: Paperback
I got this for me and my husband in anticipation of our newborn arrival in about a month. We haven't really gotten any/many "expecting" books (they seem a little cheesy, etc.). But my husband had been asking questions about what to do with a baby, etc. so have been looking for a book that would actually be useful, and this seems to be it. We have flipped through a lot of it already, and we do anticipate it being a good quick reference for new things that may come up or occur once we get our newborn home. It is pretty practical, breaks things down to easy to understand language, with a sense of humor, etc. It covers the gamut of things that could possibly come up that you would have questions about if you are a first time parent. We will be keeping it at arm's length in the nursery for sure. I also like that the tone is current, practical, explanatory, rather than hippy-dippy, spiritual mom-centric. It's just telling it like it is, and a great modern how-to for most things baby. I hope this helps! ... show more

  • Great for 1st time dads
Format: Paperback
When I bought this book it was more of a joke than anything, I didn't think it would help me at all with my first born. Ironically there is so much usefully information in this book it's crazy!!! I'd say my favorite thing about this book is it puts everything you need to know about the baby into a " mechanical " POV. super funny and a great gift idea for the gear head dads! ... show more

  • Husband loves it!
Format: Paperback
I bought this book, almost as a joke, to tell my husband I was pregnant. He started reading it right away and reads a few chapters here and there, preparing for baby. He enjoys telling me what he read in each chapter, and it seems like he's really learning a lot! He's never been around an infant, taking care of it - wish us luck! Haha (The manual part of the book is what gets him interested. It's well written and keeps his attention, with a few laughs here and there as well.) Great book for a first time dad! ... show more

  • The best baby book for an Engineer with sense of humor.
Format: Paperback
This is the greatest book about babies that I have read!! It goes to the point, no touchy-feely pages and pages about parenting like other books I read. The book describes a situation and gives you the possible outcomes or solutions, the book goes to the point, no beating around the bush, it's precise and concrete as a lawn mower or DVD manual. Additionally, it's written with great sense of humor, you really have the feeling that you acquired a little piece of delicate machinery that you need to maintain. But don't get me wrong, the book works, the advice is great and the descriptions and instructions are accurate. It's so good, that made my wife put aside her "What to expect when you're expecting" and now she checks this book more often than hers. If you don't have sense of humor or you need all those words of self-support and you need to talk about feelings... this is not your book. If you want to know quickly how to swaddle the baby or techniques to help him fall sleep, this is your book. ... show more

  • Great book for the fix-it dad
Format: Paperback
This was recommended by a colleague and my husband loves it. As some who finds joy in working on cars and motor bikes he loves how the book is written. This will be a future gift idea for new parents

  • 10/10 great for engineers/ mechanics
Format: Paperback
If you want an immensely entertaining and informative baby book this is a great choice. There are some things that could be updated according to current safety guidelines so take some of it with a grain of salt or get additional reference material for safe sleeping and other things. My husband is an engineer and he gets lost in the book reading it over and over because of how the vocabulary and terms connect with him. I bought this for $11.74 on September 19th 2025. ... show more
