Description

For more than 160 years, The Atlantic has been the premier magazine for coverage and analysis of current events, international affairs, and culture. A great deal has changed since Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Harriet Beecher Stowe planned the first issue in 1857. But since its inception, The Atlantic has given voice to some of the most provocative ideas of its time, from Henry David Thoreau's blunt naturalism to Martin Luther King's calls for justice. Today, the magazine maintains an unwavering commitment to publishing authors whose ideas help move society forward. The Plastic Logic digital edition of The Atlantic contains most articles and some images found in the print edition. For your convenience, issues are auto-delivered wirelessly to your reading device at the same time subscribers receive paper versions in their mailboxes.

  • Balanced, topical, great read
As far as I am aware, you can access all of the Atlantic's online content free (with some non-intrusive ads). I still choose to pay for a Kindle subscription because I want to feel like I am contributing to great journalism. The Atlantic is mostly balanced, always topical and well edited. It gives me, as a non-American, a grown-up perspective on what goes on in the US; and it has plenty of content that stimulates the mind of a world citizen. I hate classic left-right classifications of socio-political views because there are way more than two types of people in the world but, as crude shorthand, I would say The Atlantic is intellectually left-leaning with a conscience that does not elide thoughts that come from the right. It also wears its deep thinking lightly and engages you in conversation rather than lecture. I don’t want to name other, more popular magazines or newspapers from the US that much of the rest of the world rates higher than The Atlantic – let me just say I’ve been there, done that. ... show more

  • Intelligent and forward thinking
I like the Atlantic with a grain of salt. What makes this magazine fantastic is the combination of informed imagination and impeccable research. I would not call The Atlantic a news magazine because their best reporting is not on what happened last week but on what might happen next week. That, of course, is a huge generalization since they also dive deep into past issues (I still remember this incredible exploration they did of Obama's disastrous decision not to enforce the "red line" in Syria's gas attack). But, in general, for me, their best stuff is when they look both deeply and imaginatively at the direction current events could take us. It's speculative, and therefore not "news" but always fascinating even if not necessarily informative (or an accurate prediction). For example, they recently published an entire issue dedicated exclusively to observations about democracy in the United States. They looked at the foundations, the turns, and the future possibilities during and after the Trump era. They're smart enough never to present these speculations as predictive; they tend to be presented more as possibilities or warnings. The editorial board is critical in all things, but, like the New York Times, has a distinct cant to the left. ... show more

  • Thoughtful analysis, timely and accurate --and it's also a pleasure to read.
The Atlantic Monthly is very good at identifying the topics that are profoundly important in politics and society. Atlantic writers are often ahead of the curve. I'll read something in the Atlantic and find that two months later, it is all anyone is talking about. The articles are long enough to be meaningful but not so long that I have to carve out time. There is a lot out there that is a waste. The Atlantic Monthly is well worth the time and money. ... show more

  • It was excellent. I felt I understood the man better
First time I bought a magazine on line. I wanted to read the story abut President Obama. It was excellent. I felt I understood the man better, and admired how he stayed true to his principles. He's been proved right so many times, and I just say a quiet thank you. I went on to enjoy the rest of the magazine. My sister subscribed, and I will be sharing. The only problem for me was navigating. It took me a while to find the article I wanted. There must me a better way than turning every page to find what you're looking for, but I'm not smart enough to find it on my own. Help! ... show more

  • Informative and Timely
I have read Atlantic Magazine for many years. The writers for the Atlantic are intelligent, do their research and report on issues that are important today. I first picked up the magazine in my doctor's office and hated to put it down. So I have been a subscriber ever since. It makes you think about what matters. Maybe a few more people need to be reading it. I highly recommend it for people with thinking minds. ... show more

  • The information is very thoroughly researched, the articles are varied balanced and accurate.
I always look forward to the next edition, article and page. I’m a news person and lately even I have reached my limit. That’s why I enjoy the variety of subjects that the Atlantic offers. I just finished an article about Supermarkets! So relatable and interesting and fun. The next piece is about the coming collapse of the banking system... I’ll wait until I get back from the store to read that one. ... show more

  • Deep dive into today's political morass
These journalists investigate the most divisive and troubling subject in our chaotic world. The topics are well researched. The reporting is much more thorough than the brain-numbing TV sound bites we're drowning in. It's unfortunate that Americans don't read more because The Atlantic is an excellent source for information as well as entertainment. Very engrossing material, thoroughly researched and written. ... show more

  • Time to get out of the fanatasy closet
Thoughtful, brave & timely. I "m going to take out a regular 3 yr subscription. Especially since the NYTimes has had no direction, incite or value in he last few years.~~and NY Review of books can only be read on very long weekends. The Atlantic provides both scholarship and knowledge. It is not for the Glamour/Vogue crowd but it is extremely valuable .A pleasure to read, contemplate and find intelligent discussions of important issues. The piece on AA alone is worth the price as was last weeks impressive article on the need for an Islamic Magna Carta ... show more
