  • lots of valuable information
I am new to machining and buy a lot of reference books. This one is well written and should help me learn to use a metal lathe. I watch a lot of you tube videos and read everything I can find. I am finding machinist work to be much more technical than woodworking and need all the help I can find.

  • A Treasure Trove of good information
I found this to be a treasure trove of good and helpful information. The original is dated. 1948. And the author is British, I think. But there's so much good stuff in here. I bought it based on a recommendation from the late George Thomas (in one of his books) for a version of indexing by gears. There is info on spinning metal, info that will help me with vernier calipers, how to make round laps, and more. It starts out for begginners (choosing and installing a lathe). It's actually one home machinist sharing everything he can think of to help a fellow home shop person out, and to share as many tips as he can remember. These old timers usually write good books, and I thought this one was very good. ... show more

  • Dated, but lots of good tips for a small-lathe enthusiast.
This book was originally copyrighted in 1948 and, as such, is a little outdated in places. For example, good luck finding authentic whale oil for quenching your home-made drill bits in! Nevertheless, I found this book to be a gold mine of tips & tricks for using small hobby lathes. I particularly found the chapters on workholding and lathe milling helpful. There are some ideas for machining thin sheet stock that I've never seen anywhere else. If you are an amateur machinist who is always trying to do "more with less" I think you'll find this book a useful addition to your shelf. ... show more

  • Old and not as useful as I hoped
This is a reprint of a 60's or 70's book (poor printing, poor resolution black and white photos and spends a lot of time talking about 40's, 50's and 60's machines making it of limited utility. Fortunately the basics of machining haven't changed much so description of the processes remain helpful. The British author really doesn't like American machines, techniques or tools but I thought it was funny rather than insulting. Buy it on sale and you will get some good value. ... show more

  • Great book
This is a great detailed book on the subject. This is an old school book that will get you started the right way on the metal lathe.

  • The Amateur's Lathe
Extremely helpful for the rookie. Also a very entertaining style of writing. Truth is I couldn't put it down till I finished it.
