Description

Review Millions of years ago, the age of the ninja came to a close when a meteor hit the Earth, altering the planet's climate. Unable to adapt to these changes, the ninjas gradually became extinct. No, wait…that was the dinosaurs. In any case, my point is that everything must evolve or eventually die off. Sadly, I'm afraid that the Tenchu franchise, which once helped define the stealth genre on the original PlayStation, has fallen desperately behind the times.Although Tenchu is once again in the hands of a new publisher (Sega) and new developer (From Software), the end product adheres strictly to the well- worn formula developed by the series. Body-dragging is back from Tenchu 2, and after pulling out our old copy of that game I'd say you'd be hard-pressed to find any major differences between the basic moveset of Tenchu 2 and Fatal Shadows. That's not to say that there isn't some fun to be had here. Being a ninja is just plain cool, and the thrill of grappling from rooftop to rooftop, using a host of ninja items, and pulling off nicely animated stealth kills (of which there are a ton to unlock) will always be there. However, I'm a little disappointed that Tenchu isn't pushing the genre forward like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid have. Concept: Another entry in the long-running ninja stealth series Graphics: Better character models than the last iteration, but nothing spectacular Sound: Nice, tasteful ambient score with a Japanese folk music flavor Playability: The combat is simplistic, but effective – if you can overlook the terrible camera Entertainment: Being a shadow warrior still has its charms, but Tenchu badly needs an overhaul Replay: Moderate Rated: 7 out of 10 Editor: Matt Helgeson Issue: March 2005 2nd Opinion: Ever since the original Tenchu, I have been waiting patiently for this series to move forward, and unfortunately Fatal Shadows does little new and can be summed simply as just more of the same. Not that it's a bad thing. It's just the series could be so much more than navigating a simple environment, waiting for an opportune moment, and dealing out a stealth kill. Splinter Cell (among others) has moved the stealth genre forward, but Tenchu is still living in the past in both the gameplay and graphics departments. The environments are drab, and the AI is extremely poor at times. For example, in one level I would jump into the water when I was spotted, and the ninjas tracking me down would react by following me into the drink only to discover they couldn't swim and instantly drowned. Who knew? Ninjas can't swim. Fatal Shadows does manage to tread water, but that's about it. Rated: 6.75 out of 10 Editor: Andy McNamara Subscribe to Game Informer --

  • Another great edition to the Tenchu series
As a big fan of the Tenchu series, I'm very pleased with the game. It's much more difficult than the previous games, which makes it more challenging to some, but might be frustrating to others. But it's still a lot of fun to anyone who enjoys role playing games and the creators have added some nice new features since the last Tenchu game (Wrath of Heaven). The storyline and the music are great, although I feel that the graphics have taken a step back since Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. For those who have played Tenchu in the past, I'd wholly recommend this game, they won't be disappointed. But for newcomers to the Tenchu series, they might be more drawn to Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, because it's easier and more user-friendly. Hope this review helps! ... show more

  • mx_123 made a tream come true.
Stands among many underrated jewels that haven't received their acknowledgement, Tenchu take that line to lead. A beautiful Spin off of the main series that depict the story of Ayane following the event of Tenchu 1, and it introduces us to a new female heroine, Rin. Concerning the game mechanics, nothing is less than great. The story is very dedicated to the true fans, and I stand accused of loving this game so much. I wish I could go longer to express my fondness of this game, but I will let the game speaks for itself. Having this game from mx_123 with a good price really made my day. I highly recommend mx_123, for they stand up to their services, and for the amazing prices they provide. Do yourself a favor and favor their page in your browser. Nawaf.. ... show more

  • its works~
Its works but does have a nasty habit of freezing at certain parts, because of this I had to rush almost every mission just to avoid it freezing. I'm happy with it, but it could have been better.

  • Take it "Easy", my friend
I've been a fan of the Tenchu franchise ever since that fateful day in 2000 when I randomly picked a game from the local video rental store. That game was Tenchu. Tenchu has been a favorite, because while it is a violent game, it differs from most games in that if you happen to be doing a lot of fighting in this game--you're doing it wrong, to put it simply. Stealth is the order of the day, and it can be very satisfying to make a rank of Grand Master without a drop of blood spilt. This latest version is, as most of my fellow reviewers have pointed out, more of the same, so if you like it, you'll like it, and if you don't, you won't. Clear enough? The MAIN difference between this and the three before it is that they kicked up the difficulty several notches, as Emeril might say if he played ninja video games. I was used to playing earlier versions on the difficult setting, without much, well, difficulty. Not here, brave soul, not here. The normal level is quite a challenge, and was fairly frustrating at times. I couldn't even finish the final Boss without switching it over to Easy. Then I went back and started playing the game on Easy, and what a joy in comparison. So, my advice to you, reader, is to put that ego in your back pocket and play it Easy. You will thank me. ... show more

  • Tenchu without Rikimaru!?!
Rikimaru doesn't exist and isn't even mentioned at all in this game in any way shape or form. You absolutly can't have a Tenchu game without Rikimaru. That aside, if you wanna look at the game itself, it's more or less just a dumbed down version of Wrath of Heaven. Only 2 playable charachters,no undead, no demons, music isn't quite as good, and the bosses seem dumbed down and more bland than any of the other previous Tenchu games. I don't understand why everyone keeps saying the game is harder. I actually found it even easier than Wrath of Heaven. But if your dumb enough to try to block in a boss battle that would make sense because of the boss block counter move system in this one. Case in point, don't buy this game. ... show more
