I do a lot of 3d printing, which means a lot of tinkering with and upgrading my 3d printer. I'm also a little clumsy, so I often drop the tiny nuts and bolts, and then have to go searching for them after they've fallen down into inaccessible places. I do already have a long (3-6 feet) telescoping pickup tool, but it's a little awkward to use in the confines of my printer enclosure, and it doesn't have a light, so I was happy to review this tool. Overall, it works really well at retrieving all the (ferrous) nuts and bolts that get dropped behind my printer. Because of the light, the head is a little large to fit in all the nooks and crannies, but it gets most everywhere I need it to. The magnet is neodymium, so it's powerful enough to pick up most any ferromagnetic nut, bolt, or washer. It's already saved my bacon a couple of times (for instance: when I dropped a tiny ball bearing from a linear rail guide). The light is a nice touch; like I said, it does make the head larger, but it's definitely worth the tradeoff. It does use three tiny batteries that will be a pain to replace, so I try to use the light sparingly (it comes with a whole extra set though). I realize that there are costs and design constraints to making something like this rechargeable, but I think it would be worth it. Anyway, it's a handy tool that's earned a place in my workshop.     • The bulb housing end was bigger than I anticipated
Not a bad tool. It's a bit on the thick side as far as the telescoping portion goes, wasn't exactly expecting that. I suppose it'll lend to durability as i've seen the thinnner telescoping stuff out there just collapse after excessive use. The whole package comes with the tool, and 4 batteries in a nice hard cardboard box with foam insert. Rather nice imo. I plan on keeping it in the box when not in use. The flashlight already has a batteries in it, with a bit of paper on the top battery to keep it from starting. Just remove it and voila, flashlight. So you in effect get 8 batteries with this guy. The light is ok. It's not as dull as say a pen light, but not as bright as a regular flashlight. So, don't treat it as such. Those led's aren't THAT bright... Now when I picked this, I wasn't aware it had a magnetic base. This is a big plus since I don't have to haul out my 4ft fluorescent light that clamps onto both sides of the hood when working on cars. And the base magnet is considerably strong. So that in itself will make things easier when working in tight areas that an overhead light will wind up getting blocked by that big ole head of yours :) . The magnet on the lit end however isn't the same strength of the base. It'll do the job I suppose. I tried it on a 1lb hard drive I had sitting here. With the lit end I had to position at the center of the hdd to pick it up. The base portion just got close and snapped onto it. So keep that in mind if tensile strength is something you're after. The lighted end was alot bigger than I anticipated however. It's actually the same thickness as my thumb. This won't be suited for tight areas if you're looking to retrieve a lost screw/bolt. I'd say snake this thing close to wherever you're lost item is, and get a flexible claw pickup tube (do a search with those words and you'll see what i'm talking about) to retrieve the item(s). Overall this'll help me with the various jobs I do. It'll save time for quick fixes that require 'some' lighting, and be able to get down into areas that my fat fingers otherwise won't fit into with the flashlight. I'm thinking this'll be a nice gift for xmas or b-day for a mechanic, fisherman, hobbyist, etc. Will I get another one? I dunno... If you're careful, you shouldn't ever have to use one of these. BUT, we all have those butterfinger days I guess. Right? Buy with confidence! ... show more

Always obsessed with gadgets when I saw this I just had to have it. The device has delivered on all of the things I thought it could be used for. Combining the magnetic tip with a flashlight then placing that at the end of a structurally sound telescopic rod; in my opinion a very cool super unique tool. ALL of my friends and family see it and just have to have one. The diminutive size and solid build make this a tool I keep near me all the time. Basically an easy to carry flashlight that has great 'secret' features. The way they've combined all of this and placed it in very attractive packaging make this an outstanding gift for virtually anyone. Just a side note most items like this sell 'batteries not included'. In this case not only are they included they even add an additional set! Satisfied? I'm getting another one just to have a backup. ... show more

    • Magnets work well, light doesn't
If you are looking for a magnetic light, move along. Nothing to see here. The light is under powered and flickers if you bump it. It has magnets in the light head and the base. The magnets work well and are decently powerful to pick up dropped screws or small tools. The magnets are strong enough to hold the tool to use as a trouble light, even if the light is not really bright enough for that. The body telescopes out a decent distance. The light head is flexible and can be pointed in any direction. Just wish the light was brighter. ... show more
