This phone was bought as a gift for my mother in law, I was expecting subpar performance for a phone that cost like $100. It works well, screen and camera are good and the battery life is excellent. Phone responds well to input and doesn't lag when using it like, well, a phone.

I've had this phone for a few months now so Here are pluses and minuses about it: +Price: A great price for a good phone! +Great camera with pro setting such ASA Aperture speed etc. + Battery life is long and charges quick! +The screen is very nice, Hi Def. Great colors. + It will transfer most of your apps from your old phone if you have the USB cable. Great/Easy first time setup! +Great stereo Speakers, great sound very loud and clear! + It corrects grammar as well as spelling ... Now the Minuses: - There isn't hardly any apps to run audio or video files so I had to install VLC but still cannot see the audio files while playing them, unless I use the volume control and grab it before it disappears. -The screen comes ON with slightest movement (despite the fact that I changed the Settings and told it Not to)! Once I had this phone in my pocket. Later I saw a MSG on screen saying "The system has turned your Flashlight off because it stayed on for over 30 minutes"! So the phone screen turned on in my pocket by itself, while walking and then somehow turned the flashlight on without me knowing! I was Not impressed! - The photos taken by camera, take too much space! I cannot take pictures which are less then 3+ MB! No matter what settings I use, it only goes up...up to 16 MB for a single photo?! - If you are used to Samsung phones then this phone will take some getting used to! The Escape and working Apps indicators are on the opposite sides. The phone access, is to wipe the screen vertically and some other differences. -There are no email program beside Gmail and no internet browser except for google! -I had to go back using my old phone because of these little annoyances! I do not use the fingerprint on any phone because if your finger is wet (or it's raining) or sweaty then it will Not work! In fact I leave my phones Unlocked. Twice It helped the (Honest) people who found it to call me at the house...but I would not recommend it. ... show more

Great phone for under $100 purchased on Black Friday. This phone is almost as good as my $600 5g Samsung. I purchased this phone to use in another country where I live part of the year. (Dominican Republic) I was a little worried about getting it set up there but it was up and running in about 5 minutes. It really does just about everything my Samsung does except the camera 📷 is a little less quality and the speakers isn't as loud even though it has two. I selected this phone because of the price and purchased many TCL televisions for several of my vacation rentals in Florida and they never let me down so I figured there phones would be similar quality and they are. I'm not sure I'll ever buy an expensive cell phone again with this type of quality for under $100 because it has everything you want and more for a lot lower price. If you're looking for something INEXPENSIVE with high QUALITY you won't be disappointed with the 40 XL TCL. ... show more

Where do I begin? Well, this is by far, the worst cell phone I've ever owned! I purchased this phone to replace my old Huawei, and in hindsight, I should have stuck with Huawei--or any other brand for that matter. This phone is extremely quirky. It has so many weird features that make this unit so inconvenient to use on a daily basis. The included apps are crappy and even if it's an Android phone, the OS is faulty. The worst feature, by far and away, is the receiver (or "ear speaker"). I don't even know if it has one at all. When you call and put the phone to your ear the sound is so faint that the sound is extremely hard to hear, even at the loudest volume. I think the sound actually comes from the top loudspeaker, which is so awkward to hear too. This phone, by the way, has the two speakers located on opposite sides, the top and bottom--to make it sound more "stereophonic"?? Also, the constant notifications that keep popping up are so annoying! Even if you turn them off, they're constantly popping up! In addition, the data on this phone is spotty, to say the least. It takes forever to grab a signal, but then it drops it so often. It does not have an e-sim capability either, even when TCL tech support insists it does--that's one of the reasons I ended up purchasing this crappy phone, but then the e-sim card did not work. The only redeeming feature of this phone is perhaps its extra large screen, which is decent. I wish I could just return this phone and get a different one, but now it's too late. I know it's cheap, but essentially you'll get what you paid for. Do yourself a favor and skip this piece of junk altogether and find a different brand name, even if you have to spend a few extra bucks. ... show more

Cons I don't like how big and heavy it is. It's about 2 inches longer than the full screen on YouTube...so there's about an inch of blank screen on either side of the video. This also makes the bottom of the screen out of reach for one handed use even with a pop socket. The back light doesn't turn off unless you hit the power button. This means you can send text messages etc, just holding it in your hands, pocket dial, or just run you battery down with the lit up screen.
