Easily the bible for taking payments on the web. My son and his wife run a little site selling memorabilia and antiques and they were having problems with their payment systems. My son is pretty savvy when it comes to this stuff and he took this book, read it, applied a few things he learned and had their system redone and working properly in no time. I myself wouldn't know how to open the web site period so based on his experience and his results I'm giving it five stars. He said it's concise, well thought out and presents the information in a straight forward manner that can be immediately applied to the reader's situation. This is a very technical Ruby on Rails book. I was hoping for a more high level more that would help me explore my options. If you have already decided to use Ruby on rails, this is probably what you're looking for. It is very in depth and detailed. There's plenty of code examples and the writing is very concise. The writing is also very dry, not at all conversational. I write code, but I'm not a rails programmer. Even if you are very technical, this is not an introduction to rails, it's clearly written for someone who is an experienced Ruby on Rails programmer looking to use that tool to accept payments on the web. ... show more

The skill level indicated on this book is in between beginner and expert. It includes code for programmers to set up accounts that will receive money in many different was including Pay Pal but even through direct connection to credit cards. For example, ticket purchases, subscriptions, and so on. It includes setting up connections to banks, adding fees and calculating taxes, and insuring the transactions and records are secure. ... show more

The first thing you need to understand is this the information in this book is done with Ruby on Rails, if you are working with other frameworks the base knowledge is transferable but it's optimized for Ruby on Rails developers. Taking money over the web is crucial to building any type of e-commerce or Sass software, but there are many ways of doing it. Noel takes you through both Stripe and Paypal payment solutions. Even with the case of Stripe there are multiple ways of handling the credit card information, either passing it through your server (Not desired) or having the client send it directly to Stripe. Paypal offers a whole new way of communicating between your system and paypal doing the processing. I judged a book by its cover, and that is my fault, but the cover offers a great many bulletin points about what this book will do, including: * Set up a payment Gateway * Failed orders * Security management * Working with PayPal * Working with Stripe and much more. And all the above is true, but what is not mentioned on the cover is that this is all wrapped around Ruby on Rails. Which is great, but if I were looking for a Ruby book on this subject, I doubt I would have found this, and this did not educate me in what I was looking for. All of which is a real shame, Because if the book is what you need, its rather good. Noel Rappin has an easy way of communicating, a little cold, no humor that I saw, but that's okay, because its not a comedy book! (I learn best when humor is used, but this book was not written solely for me, so to judge it on that would be most unfair. The "coldness" does not impact the score I gave the book). As a programming book, well, its a bit of an odd mix. It has all the code for you to type in (don't worry - you can download it!) it shows the code, and explains a line here and a line there. And contextually that's okay, but if you understand the rest of it, you probably don't need some of the little explanations to be so clear. If you view this book as a guide to online selling and what you need to know, its a 1 star review, and this is an awful purchase. If you are looking for a great book on using a set of Ruby tools to integrate with PayPal or Stripe, this is a five star book. And if you want a how-to on how publishers should not build a book cover, again, this is a 5 star book. ... show more

If you are interested in creating your own e-payment app, this book will walk you through the process. It assumes a working knowledge of Ruby and Rails and Javascript. If you are a total newbie, come back when you are comfortable with those two because this is a technical manual. That being said coverage is comprehensive. I was surprised about how involved the whole process is but the author breaks it down into sensible, doable steps, It examines all that can go wrong and provides ways to head off disasters. although the scope is broad it si not overwhelming. The writing good for a technical manual. It is not jargon laden and the information is well conveyed. An interesting book for anyone with a business with an online component or for anyone who wants to understand the process. ... show more
