Description

Most abusers display warning signs that intelligent women miss, mostly because the majority of women have not been trained to recognize them. In this groundbreaking book, Lynn Fairweather, an expert in the field of intimate partner violence response and prevention, provides women with the information they need to recognize dangerous men before they become victims of abuse .Educational and empowering, Stop Signs exposes the discernable attributes, tactics, and deterrents of abusers, arming women with the tools they need to choose a safe and loving partner. In the first section, Fairweather familiarizes readers with the topic of intimate partner violence and explains how to develop the combination of self-esteem, preparation, and assertive awareness that can protect women from involvement with abusive individuals; in the second section, she explores the minds of abusers, explaining what visible signs of danger are present in their attitudes and actions; and in the last section, she provides women with effective strategies for safe extraction should they find themselves involved with an abuser. A go-to manual for women everywhere, Stop Signs contains the life-saving information needed by anyone who is living with abuse, knows someone who is, or wishes to avoid becoming involved in a potentially life-threatening relationship. • Simply a must read
This book will be life changing for so many women and I would absolutely recommend it as a must read for everyone (regardless of gender). It was filled with phenomenal information, superb insights and useful information for women everywhere to learn how to notice the signs of abuse in the early stages. I loved how the author presented the information in a no-nonsense and real manner while still showing exemplary empathy for survivors. I've had several friends that have survived abusive relationships so this book really hit home for me. As an advocate myself, I quite often hear people disrespectfully question DV victims like "well why didn't she just leave?" or "why did she fall for that guy in the first place". This book takes down myths like that which surround Domestic Violence and puts into perspective that ANYONE can fall prey to a master manipulator and experienced abuser. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Whether you have survived DV or not, whether you think it has impacted your life or your loved ones, this book is a must read. It will open your eyes to a world that not everyone has experienced to help with your awareness of these red flags as you move through your own life. It will also increase your empathy for others when you understand how insidious DV really is. ... show more

  • Awesome book for all women (and men)!
I haven't been in any physically abusive relationship, but this book really helped me notice unacceptable behavior in all types of relationships. Additionally, I've lent it to some friends who have had issues. I highly recommend this book: It's a very entertaining read. My husband was a little concerned when I stayed up almost all night, 3 nights in a row, to finish it. Very thoughtful, insightful, and real: You will not regret this purchase. ... show more

I highly recommend "Stop Signs" to both women who wonder if their relationship is safe and healthy, as well as people working in the field to stop violence against women. Ms. Fairweather provides sound and pragmatic advice, based on her personal and extensive professional experience. It is written clearly enough to be accessible to those who are learning about abusive relationships for the first time. It is based on theories and practices those of us who work in this field know to be true. If you are working with women in abusive relationships, consider keeping several copies of Stop Signs on your shelf to give to those who seek your support. ... show more

  • The Most Comprehensive Domestic Violence Book
I think this book should be assigned to every domestic violence shelter, center and groups. This is the most comprehensive domestic violence book I encounter that discusses why, how, red flags, and what to do after being in an abusive relationship. This book should be a text that every police officer and prosecutors must have to read and give out to victims they encounter. The book is informative and very realistic that has well rounded point of views. Lastly, this book is perfect for teens and college freshmen to learn to avoid abusive relationships. ... show more

  • Required Reading
I agree - this book should be required reading for females of every age. after exiting a damaging emotionally, mentally and psychologically abusive relationship i was stalked for more than a year until i left my home and moved away leaving no forwarding address. had i read this book sooner I would have had the validation to recognize the early warning signs I saw and could not express, validate or recognize. I may have made different choices and stayed safe. Please also read "Surviving a Stalker" by Linden Gross and Gavin DeBecker. ive read about 12 books so far and these two have been the most helpful. ... show more
