I'm a musician who has been playing the guitar and ukulele for more years than I care to admit. Recently became interested in tongue drums and after some research bought the 12" Aklot. Honestly thought that anything that cost under $50 would be junk, but I was wrong. The drum is beautiful to look at and built like a tank. First thing I did was to make sure all the tongues had good tone when struck, then set about testing the tuning. Took a while to realize that the sympathetic ringing from the neighboring tongues was affecting my tuner, but once I muted the two tongues closest to the one being tested all was well and happy to report all tongues in proper tune! By the way, this model is in the key of C, 440hz standard tuning. Thanks to the decals on the tongues, its easy to see what note each tongue is. Using some simple music theory I quickly started making beautiful music. Be aware that this drum requires using the included mallets to make a good sound. My only complaint is using just your fingers is not enough to get any decent tones out of the drum and I do not care for the finger picks. The drum now sits on my coffee table in the Florida room and I play it constantly. Are there better and more expensive tongue drums available? Of course, but at this price its a steal and a wonderful introduction to this fascinating and extremely pleasing instrument. Bring some magic to your life and let this drum mesmerize you. Peace.

I was very surprised and pleased to discover how thick this drum is when I opened it. Appears well made. It is pretty much tuned well enough to have fun with. I was a little disappointed, as others have noted, to find some of the tongues sound sort of “dead”. Some will ring with good sustain and sound with a pure sounding note but others sound sort of muted and bland. Seems to be the lower notes with this problem. But it’s a fun starter drum I suppose. I’m enjoying just making music with it. It came already numbered and with an extra set of numbers. There’s a little plastic strip covering the numbers that you have to remove so they look good. They look almost engraved after removing this plastic protection. However, take care rubbing your hand across the logo! The pointed end at the bottom stabbed me like a needle to my finger. Had to cut that part off.

I didn't want to spend a lot on an instrument because I know nothing about playing one. I listened to the sample of how this sounded and it resonated with me. I can play a few simple songs already. I mostly love to freely play around with it using the sticks and my hands. It's a great stress reliever and meditative tool.

This drum has a wonderful sound, in special when played with the mallets included. The finger tapping is ok but I found that it was too muted for my liking and my fingers got sore quickly. The mallets are comfortable and produce a lovely sound. The drum looks well made, its small and portable in his own carrying bag, also included. Each tongue has the notes labeled and numbered, and it came with a small book with several songs to get you going. It's very easy to play, anybody can do it quickly, just by enjoying the notes coming out of the drum and letting the mood and creativity take over. I enjoy playing this drum, it relaxes me and puts me in a good mood. I like it.

This is my first tongue drum, so, I decided to go with Aklot. I have an Aklot ukulele and it has performed great, so, I thought I'd take a chance on their tongue drum. It is all I expected from Aklot, a quality instrument at a good price. The notes are in tune with my tuner and the sound is crisp and clean. I highly recommend this brand to anyone starting out with a tongue drum.
