This is a pretty compact little unit that you can simply plug several types of hard drives into to wipe them. It is completely standalone so you can plug it in anywhere and just let it run. You can also attach it thru USB to a computer if you want to review what is on the drive. The device has built in menus where you can choose a variety of wiping techniques. Works like it should. Been using DoD #3 to securely erase hard drives. It takes awhile (7 hours for a 1 Tb hard drive) but then again you are using DoD security procedures to totally erase all data! Prints out a job receipt which I tape to the finished drive.

I've been testing this unit rigorously for about a week. After running about 50 drives through this thing during the past few weeks, I can say that it is worth the money to anyone that has to securely and verifiably erase a large volume of drives. After considering bulkier standalone duplicator / eraser units, as well as software only solutions, I decided on this dock / eraser. I can erase drives without having to have my workstation dedicated to the task as well as use the dock for traditional USB access. I do have a receipt printer connected to this unit and it works flawlessly. Upon a successful wipe of any kind, a receipt is printed detailing the drive model, serial number, capacity, the erase type, and the start and finish times of the wipe. This information is also stored in a log on the eraser dock itself and may be retrieved / reprinted at any time. The wipe receipt even includes a signature line. If you decide to use this dock with a receipt printer, be sure that it's a serial printer (9600 baud, etc) similar to the old Epson POS printers. This review is for the Eraser Dock Pros Tons of wipe options Easy Menu USB 3.0 There is an adapter to use with older IDE drives should you need it Can be used standalone Cons The latest firmware has a bug which doesn't display the progress percentage. It constantly reads 0.0%. The unit still wipes the drive and displays the total time upon completion. Startech is aware of this bug but could not provide a timeline to issue an update. To give you an estimate a 7200 RPM laptop SATA 2 drive seems to wipe about 4GB per minute. So a 500GB would take 125 minutes for a 1-pass wipe. I'll be keeping the unit, but definitely minus a star until the firmware update solves this problem. ... show more

I received this item several weeks ago but I have NOT had time to put this item to the test. Due to this fact, this is the reason for only four stars. However, my plans are to put this item to the test very shortly and I will give it another review. The item seems to be very well made and reading all the other reviews about the item I'm sure it is a very good product. The only con I can see at the moment is that it is only compatible with SATA HDD and SDD. Would be nice if it was compatible with other formats. ... show more

It takes a while, but the alternative drive shredder is extremely expensive. We may have to buy multiples of these to be able to get through all the old drives.

Purchased April 2017. It's Feb. 2018 now, and the dock works amazingly well. Not a single problem to date. I do a DoD wipe on a drive, and then use data recovery software to verify the erasure. So far, this device has succeeded in securely erasing every drive I've run through it. Since day 1, this device has "just worked." Also note worthy is the USB 3.0 connection to your computer - which means you can use this as a dock for hard drive data recovery projects, or migrating a windows install to an SSD.... lots of possibilities with this eraser / dock combo. ... show more

Not a bad unit with basic functionality. Prints a receipt for compliance requirements as long as you have a serial printer that will work with this. I wish you could go back and print one if you need it because my printer went off line and I wasn’t able to reprint. Wiped a 1TB hard drive with the DoD wipe and it took a few hours. ... show more
