Description

When George Clooney decides to embark on a humanitarian mission to the frontlines of a deadly war in Sudan, it would normally take months of meticulous coordination to keep an A-list celebrity safe in a conflict zone. Unfortunately, Matt Brown only had four days to plan the trip with Clooney. Drawing on a decade of experience navigating African war zones as a journalist and aid worker, Brown planned and led several trips to Sudan with Clooney to raise awareness for the human rights atrocities committed there. Many people are aware that Clooney has been a longtime advocate for peace in Darfur and South Sudan, but the fascinating backstory has never been told, until now. Star’s War: George Clooney on the Frontlines of a Deadly African Conflict is an intimate portrait of the world’s most recognizable movie star in dangerous and hostile territory, told as a memoir of Brown's time working as a celebrity fixer and guide. Sudan is no movie set. The dangers are very real and Clooney understands this, putting his life on the line in order to reflect his bright spotlight onto an intractable conflict in the hopes of raising awareness and bringing an end to the war. The book details several trips that Brown planned and led to Sudan for Clooney. In their journeys, they met Jimmy Carter and got drunk with John Kerry. They visited refugee camps, snuck across the border illegally and dodged a rocket attack. George got sick, he got arrested, and he got a little-known conflict into the national headlines and onto the president’s desk. The book also explores the history of celebrity activism, from Jane Fonda’s “Hanoi Jane” moment during the Vietnam War to Live Aid and “We Are the World” in the 1980s to the modern advocacy work of stars like Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Ryan Gosling and others. Longtime human rights activist John Prendergast has been astute at harnessing the power of celebrity activism for a good cause, especially raising awareness for human rights in Africa. Clooney and Prendergast took it a step further when they launched the Satellite Sentinel Project, which used satellites to spy on Sudan, documenting troop movements, attacks on civilian populations, mass graves and other evidence of human rights abuses. With exclusive photos and anecdotes of George Clooney on the frontlines of the war in Sudan, Star's War is the perfect book for Clooney fans, human rights advocates and armchair adventurers. • Fascinating Memoir
Format: Paperback
I couldn't put this book down! Each chapter leaves one wanting to find out what happens next. Besides providing an excellent history lesson of some of the most dangerous places in Africa (namely The Congo, Sudan, and Kenya), this well-written memoir gives one a glimpse of a celebrity when he is not in front of the cameras. Matt Brown has written with humor and intimate detail of his travels throughout Sudan with George Clooney while on humanitarian missions. This is really a very good book. ... show more

  • An authentic voice at the center of an extraordinary, captivating adventure
Format: Paperback
I’m only halfway through and need to leave a review, Matt’s delivered us an inside look at what this adventure was like. One of Matt‘s superpowers is his ability to paint the picture, his description of people, places, brings us there better than most authors. Pick this book up if you’re bored, it will take you to the heart of a conflict with those trying to end it, without any pretense, with the humility of Matt Brown, you get an authentic human telling of an amazing, captivating story. ... show more

  • Star’s War by Matt Brown
Format: Paperback
Star’s War is an interesting memoir by Matt Brown that tells in detail the three trips to Sudan that he took with the infamous George Clooney. Besides learning about the multi~faceted George Clooney, as well as Ann Curry, it takes on unique journey of East Africa from the eyes of an experienced and rather brave young man. The book is informative as well as witty and humorous. It is a very engaging and easy to read. The colorful photos are a bonus as well. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • Overcoming huge challenges
Format: Paperback
Reading Matt Brown’s Star’s War memoir was a complete eye opener. Not only do I have a greater appreciation for the courage and commitment of a super star like George Clooney, I am amazed and shocked by the bravery, tenacity, and creative skill of the author, Matt Brown. His ability to deal with huge challenges in a war-torn country, and be the go-to person to make all the arrangements and then to guide and care for an entourage of some of the most well-known TV/movie personalities to interview and document the atrocities in Sudan, is epic. Brown also laid out in great detail the complicated history of South Sudan and Darfur in the 2010-2011’s and the struggles even today. His research and documentation are thorough. An enlightening book to read; and a new author now in the publishing world. I can’t wait to read more about the unusual, risky and sometimes humorous adventures of Matt Brown. ... show more

  • Great read
Format: Paperback
Just as George Clooney uses his fame to draw attention to an important cause, the movie star is also the hook to an even more interesting story about the author's journey to war journalism. This topical book also serves as a nice summary of the conflicts in Africa and their recent history.

  • Behind the scenes of one humanitarian mission...
Format: Paperback
In recounting his suspenseful journey through conflict-ridden Sudan with George Clooney, it becomes evident that the author, Matt Brown, himself plays a starring role. He refers to himself as a “fixer,” but is more like the architect that cobbles together all the dynamic puzzle pieces to ensure Clooney’s safety and ability to witness the war’s devastating impact. At any minute, itineraries dramatically change on the whim of a local Sudanese official spontaneously creating bureaucratic obstacles or travel delays caused by bombings. Problem solving on the fly is at the core of Brown’s role planning frontline tours for both Clooney and NBC news crew led by Ann Curry. The vivid and devastating descriptions of life in that part of the world illustrate the precarious nature of what this team encounters each day on their mission. What stuck with me was the author’s unique proximity to the intersection of the local Sudanese politicians, the various US consulate staff, the South Sudanese people and a global Hollywood star whose goal was to make the world aware of the atrocities being committed against innocent people. I was also intrigued by the narrative of Brown's career as a journalist with African news outlets and his time in the Peace Corps. All of these experiences culminated in this series of assignments with Clooney. In the current context of this isolationist administration, Matt Brown’s book reminds us of how critical it is to support global humanitarian missions such as this one. The passion that Brown brings in sharing his story will come through as soon as you begin reading! ... show more

  • The Reality of a star's war in Africa
Format: Paperback
Matt Brown has done a masterful job sharing not a star-struck fan story, but the nitty gritty of traveling in war-torn regions of South Sudan and Sudan with George Clooney. Clooney, carrying only a small backpack, had only humanitarian intentions as his team sought out areas and people that could show the world what was happening. Matt was able to weave regional history as well as his own background in Africa into the narrative. He captured so well the setting, danger, personalities and even humor, that I could imagine being there. Really a great read! ... show more

  • You can’t make this stuff up!
Format: Paperback
Matt Brown in this sometimes tense, sometimes humorous tale, shines a light on a corner of the world that typically flashes before us then quickly evaporates among the countless tugs on our attention. Within Brown’s well organized thread of politics, culture and humanity, he evokes a cautionary tale revealing one possible outcome of repression run amok. Much like sports biographies, these stories need a capable hand in order to become compelling. The author adeptly avoids personal and literary pitfalls in order to keep one engaged. I found myself asking what other tales might he put before us? Job well done. Oh, George Clooney is in this book also. ... show more
