  • Great quality and sound . Price was also good
Style: XYLO-SET 37
Bought this for my daughter as a Christmas gift last year and it still works great ! Good quality and sound

  • Wonderful for a mid level learner.
Style: XYLO-SET 37
Bought this for my daughter as a birthday gift. It is perfect. She loves it. It looks exactly as it does in the photo and comes with that carrying case and one set of mallets. The mallets that come with it are hard but work well. The sound is great and the stand is sturdy enough for a 12 year old and 10 year old. It arrived on time and in good working order. I also purchased the Mike Balter BB2 series medium Keyboard yarn mallets for a less sharp sound during practice. We had no issues with tuning or bent pegs or anything. I was not fond of the shipping box. It offered very little protection and thin enough to be torn in places when it arrived. I can understand how some folks found that theirs was damaged in shipping. ... show more

  • Nice instrument -- but if you'll gig with it you'll need to make an important modification
Style: XYLO-SET 37 HG
I bought this on Amazon about a year ago and have used it regularly in concert and pit settings where space is anywhere from scarce to nearly non-existent. The sound quality is respectable except for the upper 4 or 5 notes which are so thin you can't even discern the pitch. Tuning is acceptable though a tad sharp in the low octave. Construction is of good quality and the included stand is quite sturdy. There are two problems -- one minor, the other a probable deal-breaker if you don't do something about it: -- The bag is of good quality, but be sure to reinforce the corners on the inside with a few layers of duct tape to avoid tears. -- The big problem, however, is the design of the bag. Walk a few feet with the instrument in the bag, then lay it down and open it. You'll find that most of the bars are no longer in place, as the bag puts considerable pressure on them when carried. Besides being an annoyance, it can damage the metal supports, too. My solution was to design and build a set of retainers -- simply two lengths of 1 1/2 x 3/4" lumber covered with felt. These retainers are secured to the instrument with machine screws placed in holes I drilled in the two ends of the case. Cost about $15 in total and took an hour or so to build. I have since had no problems with bars popping out. (Be sure not to OVER-tighten the retainers -- just enough tension to hold the bars in place.) See the attached photos. ... show more

  • Realistic
Style: XYLO-SET 37
It is what it is. I got this for my daughter for school band as a substitute for renting a practice marimba. It does that job well. Yes the mallets that come with this are cheap throw away trash. Odds are if your buying this though you either already have a good pair of Marimba mallets or are buying them. Different schools will want different Sticks & Mallets so even if they packed halfway decent mallets your still going to have to buy a good pair anyways. One thing of note, this is tuned to A=442 instead of standard A=440. My daughter said that all their mallet percussion is tuned to 442. I have a WW background and I know we tuned to 440, so I don't know if that's the norm or not. Either way as a PRACTICE instrument it wouldn't matter, but would be something to note if you were wanting to use it to pitch tune other instruments. All in all, it beats renting (since it can be resold) and even practice marimbas are around $1000 or more. ... show more

  • Do you like slivers
Style: XYLO-SET 37 SYN
I was very disappointed with this xylophone. The ends of the keys had strips of unfinished wood where the keys were cut. The screw holes where the screws hold the keys on the board had shredded wood too. I got about five slivers from touching it. I sent it right back. Poor quality of construction. This was the mid range synthetic one. ... show more

  • This is great for the price
Style: XYLO-SET 37
This is great for the price. I've play from the age of 12, but relied on institution that owned a full sized Musser. I find it quite resonant and will mc it I performance at any rate.

  • Inadequate packaging. Damaged.
Style: XYLO-SET 37
Packaging was woefully inadequate. Bent metal stand, broken wooden frame, mallet broken in two, metal pegs that hold keys in place were mostly bent over. Had to use a screwdriver to pry them back into an upright position. Needed this quickly for my daughter to practice on at home, otherwise I would have returned it. Definitely a practice instrument, adequate as such. ... show more

  • Okay...but I had hoped for a little more for the price
Style: XYLO-SET 37
Pretty much as advertised. Workmanship is ok, except the screw on one bar was not installed properly; looked like it went in part way, then bent. I removed it, took a pair of pliers and carefully straightened it, then drove it back in properly. Fortunately it went in fine and the instrument plays properly now. Mallets are nothing to write home about; my son fortunately has better pairs already. ... show more
