  • It Has It's Moments
If I had reviewed this after one or two listens, I would have given it three stars. I've been a huge DM fan since the 80s and name them as one of my favorite bands. They've had a long career and time is starting to take a toll on the music. The fare is mostly mid or down tempo in their signature sound, but constant slow beat and drawn out vocals cause it to drag at times (for me). And there are few memorable tracks on Spirit (musically). 'Wrong' from SotU is one such song. Sure, they are pleasant to listen to and there are some great moments, but very little I found innovative. It seems more like a B-side compilation and could have benefited from mixing in more than one uptempo tune (Cover Me). The remix disc from the special edition isn't bad per se, but it is utterly forgettable. Unlike many other DM remixes, I can't name one out of the five included that inspired me in any way. I also want to note that the glue of the special CD booklet format binding separated from the cover only a couple of days after receipt of purchase. That indicates poor QC when manufacturing. That said, as other reviewers have noted, it benefits benefits from repeat listens. Listen to it fully and then let it play in the background for a while. Put it away for a week or so then dust it off and play it again. You may find you like it better than the first listen. Lyrically, DM is strong here. While this is not one of their best albums as a whole, it's lyricism and mature depth is among their best work. So Spirit is an album of contradictions. Perhaps that will be it's hallmark and draw as time marches on. I do hope for at least one more great album to be their swan song. Get the standard edition and skip the limited edition with unnecessary remixes. ~ Kort ... show more

  • Let your SPIRIT Soar!
First off, let me say that I am a HUGE DM fan and have been since Some Great Reward. Unlike some fans, I quite like the albums post Alan Wilder. DM was at their peak for Music For the Masses, Violator, and Songs of Faith and Devotion, but every album has something you can dive into. Spirit starts off strong with Going Backwards which will open the Tour! Where's the Revolution is an honest look at our world and society today. No matter what side of the aisle you are on, you can see that their are issues and problems. This isn't new for DM, take a listen back to Construction Time Again, and Black Celebration and you will find Political Songs like Everything Counts, and New Dress. The mood on SPIRIT is dark and gloomy and the tracks are kind of slow and plodding, but that is ok! You Move is very sexy, and So Much Love reminds me of Something to Do! To me, it is the best track on the album. The thing is Depeche Mode doesn't make Commercial Music. They make music that they enjoy and Martin's lyrics keep it interesting. If you are a hard core fan, you will love Spirit. If you are hoping for another Violator, you may not! I love it! Best Tracks 1) So Much Love 2) Going Backwards 3) Cover Me 4) Where's the revolution. ... show more

  • Good news, bad news
With most of today's pop music being completely uninteresting to me, I have to turn to recent releases from my idols of the past for enjoyment. Depeche Mode is usually a good bet. I notice that other reviewers complained that there is not enough upbeat material on this album, and I have to agree. I don't expect DM to be singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or "Walking On Sunshine", but.... Every track is dark in mood, and most are heavy in execution. Still, all the news is not bad. I found 3 that are slow but strong, with power, which redeems them for me: "Going Backwards", "Where's The Revolution" and "Fail". On the other hand, there are 3 that I would have to describe as "draggy", with no beat at all for the first half of the tracks: "The Worst Crime", "Cover Me" and "Eternal". The arrangements are more energetic in "Scum", "You Move", "Poorman" and "No More", so these are much better than the draggy ones. The remaining 2 have personalities of their own. "Poison Heart" has what reminds me of the sound of a 50's ballad. That may sound bad, but really it works. And "So Much Love" actually has a pretty manic, creative arrangement; so again, we have a plus. Another complaint from reviewers is the political content in the lyrics. On that point I have to disagree. It is there for sure, but it doesn't bother me. DM paints a bleak picture of a world rich in technology but poor in soul and empathy, under the heel of dishonest governments. In "Going Backwards", we are "Turning back our history...Piling on the misery/We can track in all the satellites...Watch men die in real time...We feel nothing inside." In "Where's The Revolution", they ask, "Who's making your decisions/You or your religion/Your government, your countries...They manipulate and threaten/With terror as a weapon." On the final track, "Fail", there is a brief melodious musical interlude, and a similar ending, which I thought might signal some optimism. Alas, no, not according to the lyrics: "It's futile to even start hoping/That justice will prevail/That truth will tip the scales." I did come across a song about love and desire, but even that one is rather scary: "I can't lie/I can't fake...There is so much love in me/You can despise me/Demonize me/It satisfies me/There's a fire/In my veins/The desire/Causes pain." Not exactly a happy, romantic feeling. So, if you are looking for "happy", you are in the wrong place. Depeche Mode is a proven band, and an institution in pop-rock music. No artist can please everyone with every album they record, especially if the artist wants to experiment, to stretch. I guess all I can say to prospective buyers is, "Caveat emptor". The prevailing mood is "downer". You just take it or leave it. ... show more
