  • Great Primer & Great Refresher
Out of all of Arin Murphy-Hiscock's books, I think that Spellcrafting: Strengthen the Power of Your Craft by Creating and Casting Your Own Unique Spells is my favorite of hers so far. The book is perfect for someone's first book on spell-casting and formulating unique spells. The information in the book is really solid and while some of it may be a review for seasoned practitioners, I still encourage you to read. The reason I encourage a read of this book is that it's not just a great review of the foundational aspects of practical magick, but there are some real gems buried throughout its pages that are sure to help troubleshoot some of your spells that you just can't seem to get to work. There were even things within this book that I had forgotten and as such had many epiphany moments while reading this book. So even for myself, it was a great refresher. Most of our textbook standard definitions of magick usually begin defining it as "the science and the art of..." While Arin strongly acknowledges the "science" of spellcrafting and lays it out in a concrete, easy-to-follow and affable fashion, Arin shows how to bring the "art" aspect into your spells and how equally important that is. So while Spellcrafting helps you tailor your own spells so that they are personalized and thus more effective for you, it does so without disregard to the occult principles necessary for successful spellcasting. One of the many things I really found interesting was the discussion about using ingredients within your spells and being aware of how they might conflict, cancel each other out, neutralize each other, or unintentionally enhance an aspect that you didn't intend to. Even better, she provides guidance on how to remedy these conflicts. Another thing I really liked about this book was Arin's emphasis on record-keeping, something I haven't seen in magick books in a long time. She likens magickal record-keeping to recording scientific experiments and monitoring what works and what doesn't work for future reference and for homing in your own spellcrating efficiency. If you read Spellcrafting and begin applying it to your magick, you are sure to see enhanced results. ... show more

  • A Perfect Addition to any Witches' Library!
This is a wonderful well written book on spellwork and how to strengthen it! The author gives a little background on spells but not too much because she already knows the reader already understands what they are and goes right into telling you how to strengthen your own spells and how to make your own spells in a way that is easy to understand, but doesn't sound condescending in the process. I finished the book in just two nights. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone that is practicing witchcraft. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised
This book came in barely 12 hours ago and I’m already halfway through it. Too many books on the topic of witchcraft are filled with fluff and things people just want to hear. This ones down to earth and realistic with an author that isn’t preachy and encourages you to explore and decide your own morals and things that work for you while teaching you the rules of designing a spell and how to break them effectively. I always heavily vet my authors before buying a book. This one I didn’t and was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this for beginner and intermediate practitioners ... show more

  • Wonderful
Everything I hoped for. Have not read but skimmed. Appears to be exactly what I was looking for to further my journey.

  • Extremely technical.
I was hoping for a more intuitive, get-in-touch-with-yourself type of spellcrafting book. This one recommends a lot of detailed stuff, like calculating the hours for every day to see which planet rules that hour, so you can cast a spell under the planet that is most attuned to your desired outcome. Blah blah blah. Apparently different days of the week correspond to different planetary rulers, but since someone made all of those associations up, it doesn't feel very mystical to me. What about our own associations, ourselves as sources of wisdom for our craft? Sorry but that kind of technical, prescriptive spellcrafting is not for the intuitive, eclectic witch who questions things. ... show more

  • A wonderful introduction! Good reminder of foundations too.
Love this author. I especially love that the author is wicca but doesn’t try to push that on you and is very clear that spellcraft/ witchcraft is personal and doesn’t have to be connected to a religion. I also like that they don’t sell the “and motte it be” and the be all end all of closing phrases. I like to make my own and I feel like the author truly did an excellent job of offering guidance and tips without disrespecting the fact that it’s YOUR craft! It was nice and easy to read. I already have a fair amount of experience with the craft, but I am also self taught and cobble together elements that I like from all over and my own intuition. This was my first official “how to book” and it was nice to cross reference some of the things I had discovered on my own with another source. I was a little nervous because it is so personal, and I’m very sensitive to “tone” in writing but I feel like the author was gentle but firm, and gave me some new things to consider while also affirming somethings I had already found to be true. So it was a nice experience! ... show more
