I was looking for something to replace the old white shelf in my room. I chose this item for three reasons: it matches my black dresser (which is also South Shore), it's a great size, and the price is more than reasonable. Delivery: The box was a little ripped upon arrival which is understandable considering the weight and size of the box, but everything inside was packaged so tightly that it didn't matter. The items were bound together by cardboard and saran wrap so there were no broken pieces or scratches to be found. The boards were dusty with what looked like saw dust, but a dust cloth took care of that easily. Assembly: Putting this shelf together was a breeze, I barely looked at the directions. All the pieces were there (they even provided a couple of extra pegs), I had no trouble differentiating between screws, and the labels on the boards were legible. To be honest, the hardest thing about putting this shelf together was removing it from the box. I was tempted to just rip the whole thing open, but was worried about a possible return. Final product: The shelf holds a lot and it looks great. I have a mix of books, boxes, electronics, toiletries, hair products, and knick knacks on it. It's completely full. Yes, it is cork board so it's not made for extremely heavy items like hardcover anthology sets (that requires solid wood), but it still holds a good amount of weight. A good tip for cork board is to distribute the weight evenly between shelves, you're less likely to have buckling issues that way. I would definitely recommend this product. ... show more

    • Attractive and Well-Built with a Minor User Modification

We found this bookcase to be easy to assemble and constructed well enough that when we checked the square it was dead on. The finish is nice. There was one 4 inch crack in the veneer on one of the side panels, but nothing serious enough to warrant returning it. We bought this unit to hold my collection of cooking magazines. After loading 140 of them on the top shelf, we noticed a big sag in the shelf. So, we went to Home Depot and spent $4 to buy two packages of metal, nickel-plated, 5mm "House-Mates" (HM) shelf supports to replace the plastic shelf supports which are supplied with the unit. The metal supports are superior for three reasons: 1. The pin which goes into the side of the unit is longer than the plastic one, providing more stability; 2. The horizontal part the shelf rests on is twice as long, providing more support and, 3. The metal pin is not going to snap off like the plastic one might if you overload the shelf. 140 magazines is definitely overloading the shelf! To install the metal shelf support, just push them in the existing holes, twisting them back and forth if necessary to seat them. Then, just put your shelf back on. The shelf may still sag, but you won't have to worry about it collapsing. The only ways to prevent sagging are to support the shelf in the middle or put less weight on it. We have 3 similar bookcases we bought 30 years ago and those shelves have been happily sagging under the weight of our magazines. If you are still concerned, only put heavy things like magazines on the middle and bottom shelves and not on the removable ones. A tip--the cardboard backing is slightly undersized. So, center it between the two vertical sides before starting to nail it on, or else you may find you have little to nail into on the other side. Regarding the cardboard backing, our old shelves have cardboard backing and are fine. Unless you plan to slam your books onto the shelves, the backing provided is plenty strong. The unit comes with a bracket to mount it to the wall. We did not find this necessary. When we positioned our bookcase against the wall, it was level and solid, with no tendency to lean forward. Instead of using the mounting bracket, we were prepared to use two shims to have the unit lean slightly back towards the wall. But, this was not necessary. Our old shelves are also free standing and have never tipped over. If you live in an earthquake-prone area, anchoring it to the wall is probably prudent. All in all, we are very satisfied and would buy this brand again. Except for the plastic shelf supports, it is well-engineered and built. ... show more

Pros -pretty sturdy build (as long as you put it together correctly) -great modern look -There is a large flimsy piece that has to be nailed on the back of the bookcase to enclose it, I didn't add mine because when it comes in the box it is folded so there are creases vertically on it, its your choice whether to keep it or not but honestly it looks good either way -pretty easy to assemble myself and a 7 year old did it. WORD TO THE WISE DURING ASSEMBLY SCREW ONE SIDE BEFORE ADDING THE OTHER SIDE, AND MAKE SURE TO ADD THE BOTTOM FRONT PIECE BEFORE SCREWING IN FINAL SIDE PIECE BECAUSE I DIDN'T DO IT AND NOW I CAN'T GET IT ON UNLESS I DISASSEMBLE THE ENTIRE SIDE You will fully understand what I am saying once you read the directions and see the separate parts -I noticed that someone said that it was not real wood that is untrue you can smell the wood and I still smell it every time I walk by the case, which I don't mind. I personally didn't find any flaws to the product because the problems I have were self inflicted from not properly assembling.     • Great product for a great price!
I purchased three of the Maple and one Cherry bookcases. Arrived in good shape and in a reasonable time. They went together easily, all three fit together well as a whole wall unit in our library space. They look wonderful, and all the hardware needed was there, even has a safety bracket to keep from falling forward. We are very happy with this product. The only con could be the small plastic shelf holders, we will see how they hold up over time. (after one and a half months, holding up great!) Have had them up for about a month and a half, loads of books, they look wonderful, and have worked very well. And for the price, you can't beat it!! I especially like the hardware that allows you to secure to the wall so they can't be pulled over easily! ... show more
