Yep, they are cheap particle board. But, they are a good deal and I used three of them and then trimmed them out with real wood for the top of a hutch I put together in family room. Secured to the wall and with additional finishing nails and trim they work beautifully. These are a great shelf to "hack" a wall unit. I am really glad that the did not look at the reviews before purchasing. Yes it's a cheap product but if you are not rough and take care of it, it turns out really nicely and looks fantastic! Putting it together took a couple hours by myself, but then again I've only ever put together a small ferret cage so this was also a learning experience. If you pile big heavy books on the upper shelfs, yes it will bow. But if you read the instructions heavier objects should be placed on the bottom. I've had this bookcase for over 5 months, it went through a moving with me recently and seriously, it looks just like when I first got it. Shiny, sturdy and cute. Perfect size, not too big, not too small, not too heavy. Wood is nice and thick, I put all together by myself when I was 8 months pregnant and took me 25 minutes. I highly recommend it. Pros and Cons: 1) The black bookcase cost $63.99. 2) The bookcase is very easy to assemble. (I read a lot of reviewers whining about how hard it is to put together, a screwdriver and a hammer.... oh yea... a little common sense) 3) The bookcase is made out of particle board and laminated black. (refer to #1) 4) The bookcase probably won't hold 300 pounds per shelf, not even 100 pounds per shelf. (refer to #1) 5) The bookcase had flimsy packaging and the box was damaged. Luckily the particle boards were not damaged. (refer to #1) Note: This is a cheap bookcase. Exactly what I thought it would be and perfect for what I wanted it for. If I wanted an expensive bookcase, that supported a lot more weight and was made of solid wood construction; I wouldn't have shopped on Amazon for a cheap black bookcase. For the price, this is an excellent book shelf! I am a petite woman and assembled it myself, while my husband was at work. The instructions were easy to follow and I had no issues with assembly. Please note: the directions state not to use a drill. This is very important, as that is what causes the screws to go in at the wrong angle and push through the side of the shelves. Use a screwdriver and go slowly, so you can feel that the screw is in the predrilled hole. Each shelf is rated at 15 lbs, but I am sure my books weigh more than that. No buckling or signs of sagging, although I'm sure they will over time and I'll have to replace the shelves. However, it looks great in my space and the price was amazing! ... show more

Since this was a bookshelf, I put my books on it. However, it apparently wasn't designed to hold books. Maybe it could handle something lighter like stuffed animals, but definitely not books. After just a few days the shelves have bowed significantly. It looks really bad and it's only getting worse. I don't know what material the shelves are made out of, but apparently it's not much sturdier than a heavy cardboard. ... show more

After reading multiply reviews stating the box or product was damage, I was a little nervous on buying. I still went ahead and bought it. When it arrived the box was actually in great shape and product was not damaged! Building this bookcase was actually a walk in the park compared to other furniture I have built. The instructions at first seemed externally overwhelming but once I realized the parts are actually labeled for you, it went super fast. It took me maybe less then 45 minutes (power tool kept running out of battery and couldn't find my hammer for a good 10-15 minutes. ) I'm very happy with my final product! ... show more

I received the package. I had ordered the shorter bookshelf before, so I wanted to order the taller one as well so that they match (using both in my closet for extra shoe space storage/display. I started building the bookshelf, and noticed that one of the long boards (the left side) was made poorly with the pre-done holes for the hardware unaligned, so two of the shelves did not sit correctly. The level was correct, but the alignment was way off, making two of the shelves stick out oddly from the left end, making the corners stick out. Only reason why I decided to keep it is because I had already taken the time to build the bookshelf, and It was not going to be seen since I am using it in my closet, and the thought of dissembling the whole thing and repackaging it would have taken so much more of my time. I would love my money back or at least a good portion of it. The product I received was just made poorly. And unfortunately you would not have been able to notice this until you are almost done building it and inserting the shelves (which almost is the last step). ... show more
