It's nearly perfect. It has all of the necessary features I wanted to upgrade my car's audio system. (2004 BMW Z4 2.5i, Premium Audio (non fiber)) The old stereo had a headphone in adapter but the audio was always slightly "off", like compressed or something. This runs pure audio straight through and sounds amazing. Android Auto works through type C and shows up without issue. Maps are wonderful, and the call quality is excellent with the included microphone. For the price, you really can't do any better. (Note, this head unit is a rebrand kit used by 3 different companies. Boss Audio, SSL, and Planet Audio all have this same unit.) The only complaint I have is that it's WAY TOO BRIGHT at night and slightly too dim in the day. Obviously in a convertible the daylight thing is a bigger issue since I have no roof sometimes lol. It's not impossible to see, but it can be difficult if the sun's in just the wrong spot. The built in dimming is not good enough either. At night it is distractingly bright with no options to turn it down beyond a certain point. Even with using "night mode" apps, anything lighter than a "mild gray" is like a flashlight. I wish that function had a wider array of customization, but it's something I can live with. If the software was more customizable, it may be possible, but it could also be a hardware limit of cheap LED controllers so who knows. I did not use the camera as my car wiring is really weird and I didn't feel like chopping things up to find/run the wiring. Given that most AA-compatible head units are double din and start at some $700 on sale, I think this one's a real steal for a single din with all the tech packed into it. I would have loved a double, but my car can't fit those. There are some no brand Chinese knockoffs on ebay as low as $100, but having one from a brand I at least recognize (and can pronounce lol) is nice. I may look into getting one of those wireless Android Auto adapters at some point to take thisnthing to the NeXT LeVEl, but that's outside the range of this purchase/review. ... show more

*** UPDATE: I contacted customer service and told them about the issues I noted below. They promptly sent a new unit, which seems to be all good. Great customer service.**. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought this as one part of a large improvement project for my truck. When I finally installed it a few weeks ago it worked OK, except for the Bluetooth. The unit just did not put out a Bluetooth signal to connect to. It still doesn’t. The second problem is that it does not consistently power on. Audio output will be there without the screen being on. The third issue is with connecting my iPhone via CarPlay. It works on occasion, but maybe 20% of the time. All in all, this is very disappointing. It seems like maybe a major software issue. I have performed a factory reset a few times to no avail. It’s basically unusable. Unfortunately I have exceeded the return window because of my project timeline. To be fair, I have not attempted to contact customer support and will update if this gets resolved, but at this point I really feel like they should just take it back. ... show more

    • Yes, but caveats...

Installed unit into a 2001 VW Beetle for the CarPlay support. Unit fit perfectly, sounds great, looks great, and is the perfect price for a unit like this. I haven’t tested any of the other features because after installing and testing, I found that when the illumination wire is connected and the headlights turned on, the unit dims as expected, but then sporadically blinks to the daytime brightness for a fraction of a second before returning to the dimmed setting. I contacted SSL tech support and they were unaware of that issue. I have requested a replacement through Amazon. Once that is installed, and as long as it works as expected, I will update my rating. I’m just disappointed I have to tear my dash apart again... Moral of the story, test it before buttoning everything up so you too don’t have to do the install twice. Edit: Installed second unit and same issue with blinking. Checked the voltage for my illumination connection and am getting 11.4V to it. Perhaps there is an issue with the car, so I’ll just live with manual adjustment for now although the screen is so bright on the dimmest setting that I shouldn’t need to worry about it. Still too bright for night driving; will need to find a workaround for that. ... show more

The stereo was great for about six months then the screen went black while driving. I was able to restart the car and it worked for the rest of the drive. The next day it worked fine on the way to work but would not turn back on afterwards. Emailed SSL and still no reply from them. Huge disappointment....Update. Soundstorm Laboratories emailed me back and did in fact exchange the unit. No problems thus far and I am happy with the stereo. ... show more
